Greta- mini-schnauzer to adopt in bozeman montana

Greta is a Female Mini Schnauzer Dog for adoption to a very loving home in or near Bozeman, MT. This very special Dog is 10 yrs years old and weighs 20 lb pounds.

Greta is being placed for adoption by owner because she is not willing to share the home with other dogs. She can be very affectionate and and funny, and she is good with older kids and even a cat and is great with people.
She tries to be very controlling of the other dog, whom she has lived with for 3.5 years. She has not shown a tendency towards the same behavior with any other dogs outside the home. This energy does not mesh well with my other dog, and while it is generally well maintained, there are periodic outbursts where the two dogs spar and one or both become injured. She would definitely be a happier dog in a home where she is the center of attention.
She is a very sensitive dog and is prone to anxiety. A home with somebody always around and no other pets would let her just relax and feel safe in her role as the only pet.

I have tried many things, including a thundershirt, to help alleviate her anxiety/reactiveness. She is currently on Prozac, which we had hoped would help us train her away from these behaviors. It does help, but she is so fixated on my other dog that it has been impossible to create the separation needed to reinforce the positive behaviors.

She had unmanaged bladder stones, and came from a place where she was not well trained out of her reactive tendencies to bite if she feels her space is being invaded and she is uncomfortable or fearful. With the bladder stones, I’m sure she was often very uncomfortable. With the bladder stones managed, and with the training I have done, I have helped her realize she doesn’t need to bite to hurt in order to have her comfort restored. She still responds quickly and strongly sometimes, but the reflex to bite has been greatly reduced/eliminated.

Greta’s Current Home Environment

Greta came from an only dog house 3.5 years ago into my home, which already included 1 dog and 1 cat. We have been through a lot in our relatively short time, a move across the country, a period of time living in an RV trailer, and now in a house. Recently, as I’ve pursued a relationship, there is now another dog, making a house with 3 dogs and 1 cat. We live active lives, walk the dogs on a longer walk every evening on top of long (7-16) mile hikes most weekends. We also take a lot of time to reinforce calm behaviors when walking and at home.

Greta’s Current Family:

For the first 3 years Greta has been with me, it was me, Greta, my other dog and a cat. In the last 6 months, she has been living with my partner and an additional dog as well.

Greta’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Greta is on the Royal Canin Urinary S/O diet to avoid bladder stones. She loves to hang out, go for hikes, will bike in a basket or dog trailer, will plow through as much snow as her little legs can handle. She does like to look for rodents, and will occasionally try to get one.

Cute Greta Story:

Her version of “rollover” also includes a 360 spin, which is very cute.

I have taught her a trick, “kissy,” where she will give you one little lick on the nose. I very much enjoy picking her up, turning her over and holding her like a baby, and asking for a kissy. She seems very comfortable with this with me.

Why is Greta Being Rehomed?

She tries to be very controlling of my other dog, whom she has lived with for 3.5 years. She has not shown a tendency towards the same behavior with any other dogs. This energy does not mesh well with my other dog, and while it is generally well maintained, there are periodic outbursts where the two dogs spar and one or both become injured.

It does help, but she is so fixated on my other dog that it has been impossible to create the separation needed to reinforce the positive behaviors.

Greta’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

Looking for an active family who is willing to work with her and enjoy her company as much as I enjoy hers.

Additional Comments:

If, for ANY reason, the placement does not work, please please contact me again. It would break my heart if she ended up in a shelter or a situation where she is not happy.
