How Private Pet Rehoming Works

We’ve designed the process around one simple idea: we interview you about the pet you know and love; you shouldn’t have to figure out how to write an adoption advertisement.

Tell Us About Your Pet

Answer friendly, guided questions about personality, habits, health, compatibility, favorite things and the home you’re hoping to find.

Add Your Best Photos

Upload clear photos that let prospective adopters see your pet’s face, appearance and personality.

Review the Profile We Create

Our system transforms your answers into a polished adoption profile. Review it carefully and make changes before publication.

Complete Your Rehoming Setup

Choose the appropriate PRN rehoming option and complete checkout. Payment alone never causes a profile to be published.

Approve Your Pet’s Profile

You see the finished profile first. Nothing goes live until you confirm the information and authorize publication.

Choose the Right New Home

Connect with prospective adopters, ask questions and consider suitability. The final adoption decision remains yours.

Pet Rehoming Network Is Not a Pet Marketplace

Pets aren’t products, and responsible rehoming isn’t about finding the first person willing to take an animal. The goal is to find a safe, committed home where that individual pet can be understood, properly cared for and loved for the rest of their life.

That’s why our process emphasizes honest information, thoughtful adopter screening, veterinary continuity, owner privacy and a careful transition into the new home.

DIY Pet Rehoming or Full Service Help?

Different owners need different levels of help. PRN offers a guided DIY route as well as our established Full Service rehoming option.

DIY Pet Rehoming

A good fit when you’re comfortable communicating with and evaluating prospective adopters yourself, but want a professional framework for presenting and rehoming your pet.

  • Guided dog or cat intake
  • Professionally generated adoption profile
  • Photo-supported public profile
  • Private contact pathway
  • You manage prospective-adopter conversations
  • You choose your pet’s new home

Full Service Pet Rehoming

Prefer more hands-on help? Our Full Service option is for owners who want Pet Rehoming Network to take a more active role throughout the rehoming process.

Why Rehome a Pet Privately?

When circumstances allow, home-to-home rehoming can give a pet continuity while a suitable adopter is sought. The pet’s owner can provide prospective adopters with details that are difficult to learn from a brief encounter: daily routines, quirks, favorite activities, training, veterinary history and the kind of environment in which the pet is happiest.

  • Your pet can remain in familiar surroundings during the search.
  • You can communicate directly with prospective adopters.
  • You can explain your pet’s real personality and needs.
  • You decide whether a particular home feels suitable.
  • Veterinary records, food, supplies and familiar belongings can follow the pet to their new home.

Privacy Without Anonymity

Your personal email address does not need to be displayed publicly on your pet’s adoption profile. PRN provides a contact pathway so interested people can reach out without us simply publishing your private contact information for everyone to see.

Honest Information Matters

A successful adoption starts with an accurate picture of the pet. Health conditions, behavioral needs and compatibility concerns should be disclosed honestly so adopters can make an informed decision.

What About a Rehoming Fee?

Charging a reasonable adoption or rehoming fee does not mean you’re “selling” your pet. A sensible fee can help discourage casual or impulsive inquiries and reinforce that adoption is a serious commitment. Any rehoming fee is arranged directly between owner and adopter; Pet Rehoming Network does not take a percentage of it.

Please don’t advertise a pet as “free to a good home.” Thoughtful screening, meaningful conversations and a reasonable rehoming fee provide a more responsible framework than simply giving a pet to the first person who responds.

Help Your Pet Start Their New Life Well

The handoff is part of responsible rehoming too. Whenever possible, send your pet to their new home with the information and familiar things that will make the transition easier.

Veterinary & Care Information

Provide veterinary records or arrange their transfer, along with medication instructions, feeding information, microchip details where applicable, routines and other care information the adopter should know.

Belongings & Familiar Comforts

Food, a bed or blanket, crate or carrier, leash and harness, toys, grooming supplies and other useful belongings can save the adopter money while giving your pet familiar smells and objects during the transition.

Pet Rehoming FAQ

Do I have to write my pet’s adoption profile myself?

No. Our guided intake asks you specific questions about your pet. The system uses your answers to create an engaging adoption profile for you to review before publication.

Does my pet have to go into a shelter?

No. PRN’s private rehoming model is designed for pets who can remain with their owners while a suitable new home is sought. Pet Rehoming Network does not take physical custody of pets.

Who decides who adopts my pet?

You do. The owner makes the final decision about whether a prospective adopter is an appropriate match.

Will my email address be displayed on my pet’s profile?

No. The PRN profile can use a private contact pathway rather than publicly displaying your personal email address.

Can I make changes before the profile is published?

Yes. You’ll be able to review the generated profile and make changes. The profile is not published merely because you’ve completed checkout; owner approval is a separate step.

Should I tell adopters about medical or behavior problems?

Yes. Honest disclosure is essential. Prospective adopters need enough accurate information to decide whether they can safely and responsibly meet your pet’s needs.

Should veterinary records go with my pet?

Yes, whenever possible. Veterinary history helps the new owner maintain continuity of care. Include medication and care instructions and update microchip ownership information when applicable.

Should my pet’s belongings go to the adopter?

We recommend sending useful supplies and familiar belongings where practical. Beds, blankets, toys, food, crates, carriers, leashes and other items can make the transition easier.

Is it okay to charge a rehoming fee?

A reasonable rehoming fee can be part of a responsible placement process. It is not a substitute for screening. Any fee is paid directly to the pet owner; PRN does not take a percentage.

What if I need my pet gone immediately?

Private rehoming works best when there is enough time to look for a suitable home. PRN is not a shelter, boarding facility or emergency placement service and cannot take physical custody of a pet. If the situation is urgent, contact appropriate local animal-welfare or emergency resources.

What’s the difference between DIY and Full Service rehoming?

DIY is designed for owners who are comfortable managing prospective-adopter communications themselves while using PRN’s guided profile and rehoming framework. Full Service provides a more hands-on level of PRN assistance. See our Services & Fees information to compare the options.

Can I rehome more than one pet?

Yes. Individual pets can have their own profiles, and important relationships—such as pets that should ideally remain together—can be explained so prospective adopters understand their needs.
