All About Teemu – American Staffordshire Terrier dog For Adoption in Edmonton Alberta
Name of Pet: Teemu
Location: Edmonton, Alberta, T6E 0P4
Type of Pet: dog
Breed of Pet: American Staffordshire Terrier
Sex of Pet: Male
Age of Pet: 7.5 years
Spayed/Neutered?: Yes
Health Problems: Yes Like many Pitbull breeds, Teemu suffers from environmental and food allergies. His only confirmed, severe food allergy is chicken, but through his life he has been largely limited to the proteins of lamb, duck, salmon/fish, venison, and the occasional beef.
It is possible some other, unconfirmed food allergies exist. His environmental allergies are seasonal with pollen but are relatively minor and just require monitoring, not necessarily treatment. He has had a few bouts of itchy paws but probiotic paw spray typically clears this up and I can provide this.
Behavior Issues: Yes The key behaviour areas to know about with regards to Teemu are:
Home
Teemu is not destructive and can be trusted to be left at home alone in any area. He will display some guard-barking behaviour but is otherwise not an obsessive barker either inside or when outside in a backyard. When overwhelmed at home with too many or new people he will seek out one of his toys and may start to pick it apart to remove stuffing or squeakers, but he does not do this with other items (throw pillows, shoes, etc.). It is really done in the spirit of play. When arriving home he can be excited and jump up but he is responsive to boundary setting.
Vet
Since being neutered at age 3, Teemu has had an extreme fear of the vet. To this end, he requires a Gabapentin/Trazodone combination administered prior any appointments (will need to be hidden in cheap chunks of steak or the like). I have an existing stash of these medications I can provide as well as the vet records. He will also require a muzzle in this situation for the safety of everyone, but he is well-trained with a basket muzzle which I can also provide. But let me be clear, this is the only situation in which a muzzle is needed for Teemu.
Kids
Teemu has not been around kids in his life and is very anxious around them. He has NEVER shown aggression towards a child (he has only ever barked when they have gotten too close) but you can tell by his body language that he is uncomfortable. My instinct is that he could be okay in a family with children over 14/15 but again, he is not used to this situation and may require an adjustment.
Other Dogs
At the age of two, Teemu was attacked in an off leash park and still carriers some scars on his leg to this day. Up until that point he was extremely social with all other dogs, but since then, he should not be off lead and he prefers to keep to himself. In most cases on walks he will be in his own little sniffing world and ignore most dogs even if they are locked in on him or even barking at him.
However, in the 1% of cases that a dog his size or larger is reactive to him, there is the potential for him to counter react, For this reason I always keep Teemu on a fixed-length lead. Females and some small dogs still excited Teemu and he may display desire to meet them. In these cases, when the body language of both dogs is positive, it is totally fine to meet nose to nose. Just don’t let other dogs energetically jump on him or go around his back side or he may become dominant (displayed by attempts to hump).

Gets along with dogs: No

Accessories Included: I can provide two harnesses and two leashes, some of his favorite toys, a big bag of his usual food, small stock of the treats he is used to, a muzzle, shampoo, antibiotic paw spray, two sets of ceramic bowls, a set of travel bowls, a sheepskin he likes to lay on, a few months of NexGaurd Spectra, Trazadone, Gabapentin, Metacam, his original pet passport from Sweden, vet records, a bear bell for hiking, paw towels for post-hiking, and whatever leftover waste bags I have.
Teemu’s Personality
Teemu is foremost communicative (not barking, but making typical pit bull communication vocalizations when he wants to play) and affectionate (he loves giving kisses and always wants to be touching you while sitting on the sofa or bed). His play level is average. He is happy on a nice day to laze around in a sunny spot and not do much, but on rainy days you may find he wants a bit more attention.
His favorite game is tugging or he likes you to give him a ball or toy and then try to take it away from him (not fetch). Even if you leave for 2 minutes he will welcome you back as if you’ve been gone for 2 months. He has so much love to give, is curious, and extremely driven to please in exchange for treats.
Teemu’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?
Toys: Kong stuffed toys and tennis balls
Foods: Sweet potato, salmon skin, cantaloupe, berries, and multigrain Cheerios. For his daily food he eats Open Farm Lamb with Ancient Grains and Orijen Tundra wet stew as an occasional treat
Activities: Laying in the sun, tugging, being chased when he has a ball, walks in new locations with new smells
Cute Teemu Story:
This is a bit too heartbreaking at the moment for me to write to be honest…
Why is Teemu Being Rehomed?
I got Teemu as a puppy when I was working in Sweden. Since then he always moved with me, first to the UK and then over here to Canada in Ottawa, Victoria, and Edmonton. However, now my work is taking me to Germany and there is breed-specific legislation banning the import of pit bull breeds.
It absolutely breaks my heart and I wish it were an option for me to give up my job but it simply isn’t. He is also getting to an age where flying is becoming less realistic as it is extremely stressful and can have a devastating effect on his health. I know in my heart that I have given Teemu the best life ever and that the selfless thing to do as he gets older is to settle him in a home that will love him as much as I have.
Teemu’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:
Teemu needs to be in a home with adults where he is the only animal. He needs to have have run of the house, sleep in bed with them, and be free to show his affection. Ideally they want to take him on adventures/holidays but he also has experience going to home sitters and adpats well.
Teemu can be fine in either and apartment or house, but ideally there is at least one spot in the day where he can get bright sun to lay in. They will have to be understanding and compassionate with his fears of the vet. He really just needs to feel part of the family and not treated simply as an animal.
It would be great to have a new family that would be willing to stay in touch/send occasional photos down the road but it is not necessary/too painful to stay in close, constant contact . I also have no problem with new owners reaching out to me to ask questions/get advice while they are adjusting to Teemu in their home.
