Hunter has an amazing personality. He is a very sweet and well-behaved dog in the home. Hunter’s ideal home will be with a family with active, older kids.
Black Mouth Cur dogs are an incredible breed of dog. Early settlers needed a dog that could suit all of their needs, rather than focusing on a specific task. They also needed a dog that would be a loyal and dedicated family companion so that it would protect the homestead. The Black Mouthed Cur has retained these traits to date, and Hunter is no exception.
Hunter has a huge heart and shows so much love for his family. He is also very protective of his home and family, and this has led to some issues when a family with small children moved in next door. Hunter doesn’t know what to make of them and has displayed
protective behaviors as a result (but only when they are on the other side of the fence, and yet is fine with them when they are playing in the owner’s yard). This isn’t his fault – it is in his breed to be this way.
As much as it kills them to do so, his family has had to make the difficult decision to rehome Hunter to a family who doesn’t have neighbors so close to them. Hunter is not a “dog park dog” because he is only good with confident bigger dogs who like to play rough. He went to dog park and played for an hour with three strong dogs well. But when he saw a small yapping dog, he did not do well. Hunter loves playing with his 45-pound rescue collie mix, Max.
Hunter also isn’t a dog that will walk passively on a leash when encountered by other dogs or people he has not met. Hunter is a dog that will be best suited to a country home, with a family that can give him all the love, kindness, care, and companionship that he needs and deserves
Hunter’s ideal home will be in a rural area. He needs a home with a large, secluded, and securely fenced backyard. In exchange, he will love you with every fiber of his being, and he will protect his home and family with his life.

Leash and barrier reactivity. Behavioralist said he is a dominant high-energy dog. Not aggressive but socially stupid since he was not socialized until 4 mo of age. Only confident older large dogs can handle him since he plays rough. Very sweet and calm and kennel trained in the home. We just do not have the skill time or energy to address his leash reactivity.

Hunter’s Personality
He is friendly and calm and loves to snuggle when not activated by a stimulus like another dog or kids running on other side of fence
Loves tug of war
Loves to fetch but not return the ball
Excellent swimmer
Not phased by loud noises
When he first meets a person he gets excited and always sticks his nose in there crotch
Once he sees a person a few times he acts calmer when they visit
With us his family he calmly and quietly chews his kong toys (very oral) and has no problem being in his kennel. Takes lots of naps.
Why is Hunter Being Rehomed?
New neighbors with kids 6 and 7 moved in next door. Even though they have been to our home and pet Hunter many times, he still hackles and growls at them when they are playing near our fence. He has never bitten anyone.
