Rehoming Your Cat Due to Allergies

About Rehoming Cats Due to Allergies

Cat allergies are no fun, as anyone who suffers from them will attest. If you have cat allergies, you have probably tried everything possible to make your home comfortable and dust and dander-free. For many cat owners, allergies to cats make them really uncomfortable, and in some cases, cat dander can trigger asthma attacks, hives and illness requiring hospitalization.

If you are in this difficult situation, we can find your cat the perfect home. It’s a terrible decision to be faced with, but severe cat allergies are nothing to fool around with. Rehoming your cat into a home that you have chosen, with nice people that you have gotten to know, into a home that you have personally inspected, makes the idea of rehoming your cat a lot less scary.

We encourage our owners and adopters to keep in touch. Those adopting have plenty of empathy for the owners situation. Some are even open to occasional visits, and certainly to sending photos and update on how kitty’s life is going. “Goodbye” doesn’t need to be part of rehoming a pet!

Just call Debbie toll-free at (888) 720-3322 to discuss your situation and decide whether rehoming your cat is the right way to go. We have helped many cat owners in this situation to find wonderful new homes for their cats.

Allergy-Proofing Your Home Environment

There are a number of extra things you can do to allergy-proof your home, so even if your hypo-allergenic cat causes you to have minor allergy symptoms. these tactics can help you live comfortably with your amazing feline companion.

Although no cat breed can be considered 100% “Non-Allergenic“, there are a number of allergy-friendly cat breeds that are much easier to live with if you suffer with allergies or asthma. From smaller asian cat breeds like the Oriental Shorthair and Siamese, all the way to large allergy friendly adoptable cats such as the Siberian or Maine Coon, it seems that there is a hypoallergenic breed of cat to suit all tastes. We’ve listed them all below, to help you decide on a cat that appeals to you.

  • Your vaccuum is your best friend when it comes to allergy-proofing your home. Vaccuum the heck out of your carpets, sofa, curtains, mattress and anywhere your cat may have visited. This should be done thoroughly once a week, with a light vacuuming mid-week. If your vacuum is the “old wood burning type”,  invest in a new one. You don’t have to delve out a fortune on a Dyson, but make sure the vacuum has a Hepa filter.
  • If you have carpeting in your home, giving your rugs a good shampoo will help tremendously. You can rent carpet shampooers or buy them – or you can hire a service to come in and clean your carpets professionally, using hypoallergenic, allergy removing cleaning products.
  • Get an air filtration system or two and place them in areas where you spend a lot of time. Beside the bed is one area that most people find placement is best. The living room is another. These machines can be life-savers when dealing with cat allergies.
  • There are a number of products that you can buy that will help take allergens out of the air – and off of your cat’s coat.
  • Make a 5 to 1 solution of either vinegar or inexpensive vodka with water and keep it in a spray bottle.  Spritz the air in areas where you find yourself tearing up or sneezing. It is thought to take allergy particles out of the air and neutralize them on contact.
  • Give Kitty a bath. Keeping your cat’s coat squeaky clean using a specialized cat shampoo can really help. If your cat puts up too much of a fight to get them in the sink, you can use a tea towel or hand towel soaked with a solution of lukewarm water and a small amount of shampoo. You can rinse with a solution of vinegar and water.

Allerpet cat dander remover spray mitt sprayer
Allerpet Cat Dander Spray has been a game changer for many cat owners with allergies to their beloved pets. By just applying the product to their cat’s coat with the included application mitt, they have been able to keep cat dander and allergens to a minimum, allowing them to keep their kitties.

This is something we definitely recommend trying, along with the other suggestions above, if you are considering rehoming your cat because of your allergies, or those of another family member. You may just find that you, too, can keep your beautiful fur baby.

This product, like the Allerpet above, is a must-try if you have allergies or asthma. Not only does it work to remove cat dander and allergen particles from any surface in your home, as well as airborne particles in the environment, it also takes care of pollen, dust mites, household dust and any other microscopic menace in your home. You just mix it with plain water and spray.

A great way to combat cat dander is to start with your cat. A nutritious diet high in essential fatty acids can help keep your cat’s skin and coat in tip top shape, which will result in less dander production. The main ingredient in Purina Pro Plan Allergen Reducing High Protein Cat Food is Salmon, with an abundance of Omega 3 fish oil to keep your cat – and her coat – healthy and shiny.

A good air filtration system or air purifier with a Hepa filter is a must-have if you have allergies or asthma. There are so many to choose from, and the MSA3 featured above is highly recommended. There are smaller systems that are affordable enough to keep one in each bedroom, and a larger one in the main living area of your home.

Bissell hepa filter pet vacuum cleaner
To keep pet allergens and all the other microscopic mites, pollen and dust that come in from outside and wreak havoc on your respiratory system down to a minimum, vacuuming thoroughly twice a week can make a huge difference. Be sure to pay close attention to areas where your cat spends time, and also to entranceways where people track dust and outdoor allergens inside.

A good, powerful vacuum with a Hepa filter is highly recommended, and will pay for itself in the misery it keeps out of your life. The Bissell Pet Vacuum featured above is a great choice, as it was created to handle homes with pet hair and dander to deal with.

Giving your cat a weekly bath will help a great deal in keeping her coat clean and free from the FelD that she deposits when cleaning herself. A shampoo created just for this purpose, such as the Allersearch Cat Allergen Shampoo above will turn any cat into a “temporary” hypoallergenic cat.

All of these items can help make your life better with allergies and asthma, and if you are allergic to your cat, and want to try and avoid having to find your pet a new home, they are definitely worth a solid try. Some are very affordable, while others, a little more of an investment, but one that will pay dividends in your comfort and ability to keep your cherished cat, allergies and all.
