- Mason’s Personality
- Behavior</h3 Mason is truly a wonderful dog and it is heart-wrenching to re-home him. I do not know if these are "behavioral problems" but I will list them as such. He has basic obedience (come, sit, stay). The issues are 1) he will not walk well on a leash; 2) he responds much better to commands from a man (I'm a single mom); 2) he likes to roam/leave the yard and can unlock nearly any gate or door. We brought in a trainer who told us that his intelligence is "off the charts" high. He will not be enclosed in a crate and will chew through any crate. He can unlock any door (including turning round door knobs and he opens the garage door by jumping up and hitting the door opener). He does not like to be alone so he roams to visit other dogs in our subdivision (the only containment that works is an invisible fence- and this works well because he cannot stand to be shocked). If I had to identify a "behavioral" issues the one that comes to mind is that he is likely claustraphobic. He destroyed 3 crates at 6 months old (chipped a tooth biting off the lock on the last one) and I gave up. Otherwise, I've been told by 2 trainers that came to the house that he just needs training. In particular, he needs to greet people appropriately. He simply can't seem to calm down. If he knows the person, he is too excited to sit. If it is a stranger, he acts protective with his bark (again, he has never been aggressive, it is for show). They were honest in telling me he is "head strong" and my personality might be too mild to be the alpha, so I'm just told that he needs training, patience and work in this area. In summary, he has basic obedience, but needs training when it comes to meeting people, walking on a leash and going through doors. He will listen to my neighbor or other men he recently met but ignore a command from me. We paid $2200 for "advanced" board and train when he was 12 mo old, but the trainer was awful and it turns out abusive (the man left a scar on his nose). I removed him the third week and he only gained basic obedience from that (and we had to teach much of it). So has had training and it breaks my heart, but I know I'm not the right owner for him.
