Meet Rebel, a German Shepherd Red Heeler mix dog looking for his forever home in San Jose, California. Rebel is just past the puppy stage at 16 months old. He is healthy, fixed, fully vaccinated, housebroken, micro-chipped and leash trained. He’s German Shepherd size at 50 pounds, and he has a red merle coat.

To understand what makes Rebel tick is to understand the breeds he comes from. He’s a herder through and through, and does not like to see any group of beings – whether cattle, children or cats – ungrouped. He wants everyone to stick together, and his life’s work to date has been an effort to accomplish this (somewhat ridiculous) feat of herding everything that moves. His obsession with herding causes him to appear a little aggressive, but that’s just the way it’s done. Cattle Dogs and other herders will nip at the heels of whatever beast they are trying to move along. It’s very effective out on the range, but more than a little ridiculous in the living room.
The very best solution for this “cow dog wannabee” is to find him some cattle, sheep, goats, or other herd or flock to focus his skills and attention on. He wants to apply for just about any job that will get him out on the dusty plains, doing what his ancestors did and what he, very clearly, is meant to do.

Rebel’s Personality
He is very sweet and cuddly, but can be protective and anxious with a lot of activity. He gets overly excited and nervous with new people and can show aggression and try to dominate or herd puppies and submissive dogs. He is a good listener, however can be very stubborn. If he doesn’t want to do it he won’t and will get anxious if you try to force him. We had a behavior come to train us and him and since then we are in the process of crate training and teaching him how to not pull on the leash.
Why is Rebel Being Rehomed?
Rebel is the right dog in the wrong home. Australian Cattle Dogs are a bit too intense for a home with small children. They are best suited for a home with a strong routine where he can get the exercise and mental stimulation he needs. Ideally, Rebel should be on a farm or ranch helping with the herds and flocks. He would shine as a cow dog. He’s currently home alone far too much, and when he is around the children, his tendency to nip has made them give him a wide berth. He is just not the right breed for the family.
We would like to have Rebel go to a home without small animals, puppies, or young children, since his breed is known to not have patience for them. Also someone who is knowledgeable about the breed, with a lot of patience and time to provide him with the exercise and work he needs.
