Looking for a Chihuahua dog for adoption in San Antonio, TX? Maia would love to be considered for the position of your cherished family companion.

🌟 Meet Maia — San Antonio’s Pocket-Sized Ray of Sunshine 🌟

If joy had legs, it would look exactly like Maia — all skinny giraffe limbs, flappy ears, and a heart that thumps loud enough to drown out thunderstorms and doubt. She’s the sort of dog who wakes up each morning absolutely convinced today is the day she finally catches her tail, becomes a professional snuggler, and solves world peace (probably using squeaky toys).

And when she looks at you — really looks at you — it’s like she’s choosing you as her whole universe. Tail sweeping the floor. Eyes full of devotion. A little wiggle that says “Hi! I love you! Wanna chase me? Also I love you!”

She is joy wrapped in fur, with just enough chaos to keep life interesting.

Yes, you will laugh. Yes, your heart will melt. And yes, there’s a non-zero chance you’ll have to fish her out of the laundry basket when she goes spelunking for “treasure.” Maia is the kind of dog who makes ordinary days feel like big-hearted stories you’ll retell forever.

💕 A Beginning as Brave as Her Spirit

Maia didn’t come from a breeder or a line of champions. She wandered into life like a tiny, hungry miracle — a stray with a heart too big and dreams too bright to be left outside. And then she was chosen, loved, and promised forever by a mom who saw her gentle soul…and a little girl who decided Maia was the only dog in the whole world worth having tea parties with at sunrise.

It wasn’t supposed to change. But sometimes life writes chapters we don’t vote on.

Her family has adored her fiercely — truly, deeply, with everything they had. But loving someone can also mean knowing when you can’t give them everything they deserve. Her mom, juggling health challenges and raising a special-needs child on her own, made the hardest, most selfless decision a pet parent can make: to help Maia find a home where she can live life at full zoomie-capacity, instead of whisper-volume.

There was no giving up. Only giving forward. With love. And tears. And hope.

✨ Who Maia Is (Other Than Perfect)

Maia is the emotional equivalent of a sparkler crossed with a weighted blanket.

She will curl up with you during movie night, head under your chin, snoring gently into your soul. But she will also go from peaceful nap gremlin to turbo rocket in 0.4 seconds — zooming across the house with her crinkly zebra toy, doing parkour off a couch cushion, and then returning to you like, “Wasn’t that incredible? Did you see me? Love me forever, okay?”

She’s smart in that freaky intuitive way — the “accidentally trained herself to ring a bell for potty time and proudly crate-trained in a week” kind of smart. She is ready for adventure, ready to learn, ready to pour every ounce of her love into her people.

And her people? She thinks they hung the moon.

⚡ A Few Adorable, Honest Notes

Maia has two speeds: cuddle cloud and Olympic sprinter. She needs playtime, space, or someone who actually enjoys being pulled around the block like a kite until she remembers her manners. (Gentle Leader = magic.)

She’ll skip kibble if she smells that you foolishly discarded perfectly good people food in the trash (the audacity!). But she will happily demolish a bully stick with the laser focus of a tiny athlete.

Cats? Possibly fine — unless they swagger like they own the place. Then she will pretend she didn’t even see them because one hiss once traumatized her into submission. Tiny toddlers? Maybe not, unless they’re sturdy enough to withstand a well-meaning zoomie elbow.

She is not an “outside dog.” She is an inside, near-your-heart, follow-you-everywhere, “I believe in your dreams” dog.

🏡 Maia’s Dream Life

Maia wants:

• A home where zoomies are not just allowed but celebrated
• A yard — or at least lots of long walks and playtime
• A dog sibling or a human who thinks fetch is a legitimate life calling
• A soft spot on the couch and an even softer spot in your heart
• Someone who looks at her and sees not a dog, but their dog

She will give you everything she has — every snuggle, every goofy tumble, every ounce of devotion — because loving is her life’s purpose.

🌈 Are You Maia’s Happily Ever After?

There’s a dog in San Antonio dreaming of her forever person. Someone who giggles at zoomies. Someone who believes in second chances. Someone who knows the greatest love stories start with a leap of faith and a wagging tail.

If that might be you — if your heart just did that little soft ache thing as you read this — then Maia would really, really like to meet you.

Maia’s Personality

Maia is an absolute lovebug! She loves to snuggle with you while you watch TV or read your favorite book. However, she is also VERY high energy and can go from zero to 100 in two seconds! She loves to play fetch and chase. She is incredibly intelligent and would make a great working dog or emotional support animal, or maybe even a service dog with the right training. She’d excel at a sport like agility or just as an exercise buddy. She learns very quickly — she often picks things up on her own without having to be specifically trained (she figured out puppy pads and how to ring jingle bells to go outside pretty much all on her own, though she may need a refresher on the bells, lol) and was crate trained within a week to the point that she now goes in happily when told to “go to bed”. She listens very well. All she wants in the world is to make her people happy.

Maia’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Her favorite toy was the first one I ever got her — a little stuffed Lambchop with a squeaker. Unfortunately, it got lost in a move and I guess the replacement just wasn’t the same :(. Right now she loves pretty much anything that crinkles or squeaks, though she seems to favor her new crinkly zebra over her other toys right now. She’s not terribly food motivated (unless the food is people food in the garbage can, in which case she is VERY motivated for it to be in her belly — stray habits die hard) but she will absolutely destroy a bully stick or a pig’s ear. She loves to play fetch and chase and pretty much any activity that lets her get out some of her endless energy!

Cute Maia Story:

When my boyfriend first moved in with me, he brought with him his little geriatric cat, Leela — and I mean this poor old girl pretty much only moved when she hobbled from her bed to her litterbox or food/water and back. We were worried about how Maia would do with her — Maia had never shown any signs of aggression, but could play kind of rough, so for the first couple of weeks we kept them totally separated. The first time we (very cautiously, with Maia leashed) let the two of them in the same room together, Maia was SO excited for a new friend and tried to bound up to Leela to tell her, “Hi, new friend!” Leela was not remotely interested in being friends with anyone, much less this crazy bundle of energy with giraffe legs, and hissed at Maia and gave her a swipe for good measure. Maia was mortified to the point that she backed off so fast she actually tripped over her own long legs and rolled over herself, legs flailing everywhere. From that point on she gave Leela a wide berth, I mean she wouldn’t even look at the cat and would leave the room if she noticed Leela was there.

Why is Maia Being Rehomed?

I took Maia in as a stray without knowing anything about her and when my young special needs daughter fell in love with her the morning after I found her, I was determined to do everything I could to keep her. Unfortunately, I was a newly single mother with health issues living in a one-bedroom apartment, and while my living situation has improved somewhat since then, we still live in a small apartment and have a busy lifestyle that doesn’t allow me to give Maia the time and energy she deserves to let her be the amazing dog she could be if she could live her best life. She really needs either room to run or someone who can invest a lot of time in taking her out for more than potty breaks and a short walk or two a day, and I just can’t do that right now.

Maia’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

I cannot stress enough how much Maia needs an outlet for her energy. She really does need the opportunity to just let loose and run. A yard would be ideal but I think that if she had enough indoor space to get her zoomies out she would be okay with one or two long walks a day, especially if she had another dog to play with. She is absolutely not suited to be an outdoor dog. Any outdoor spaces need to be adequately secured with a high fence (an invisible fence could be an option but I haven’t tried it so I don’t know if it would work) and nothing next to it she could use to climb over because she is an escape artist and she is a runner who thinks that being chased is a game and will not come back if she gets out.

I want to clarify re: cats and kids — Her energy level is the only thing that would concern me. When her zoomies get going she doesn’t pay attention to where she’s flailing and I would worry that she might accidentally hurt a very small child or a cat. My daughter was 5 when we adopted Maia and Maia has never gotten so excited as to knock her over but she has accidentally scratched my daughter a few times and she very well could knock over a smaller child who is less steady on their feet. I’ve detailed above about her interaction with my boyfriend’s cat so I think as long as the cat can stick up for itself it would probably be fine, but I also had my own cat when I adopted Maia who was more timid and I had to actively discourage Maia from chasing her. Maia did learn to leave her alone, but again, I would introduce her to a home with cats or small children very carefully and heavily supervised, at least at first.

I would like to at least stay in touch long enough to make sure that Maia is a good fit in her new home. I would much rather her come back to me if she is not a fit than go to a shelter.
