Smeagol’s Personality

He’s very smart. Can be high energy. Loves to go for walks. Is great on the treadmill (caught on pretty quick). He thinks he’s a guard dog. Loves to be petted (when he wants to lol). Loves being outside and in the sunshine. Loves to run, looks like the Tasmanian Devil when running (very fast). Will bark when he hears a car door close but is not a big barker inside the home. Can rip a toy to get to the squeaker part in no time.

Doesn’t like peanut butter or cheese whiz but loves cheese and cucumbers but not cutup. He likes whole mini cucumbers. He’s good with kids. He will act alpha when introduced to other dogs (little dog syndrome), especially on leash but once he knows them he’s good and will play. He’s never been around cats so I’m not sure how he’ll react to them.

Smeagol’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Loves cheese and chicken.
Ball to throw and retrieve
Loves to go for walks, run and being off leash
Just loves being outside
Going on the treadmill to run/walk with me
Yummies chew sticks from Costco.
Doesn’t love expensive treats but loves the soft milk bone.
Great Jack’s Calming dog treats – I think it’s because they are soft. He likes soft treats more than the hard ones.

Cute Smeagol Story:

I love how gentle he is with my mom. She’s never been around dogs and I think he senses that. He has won her over and she actually pets him. He’ll come sit beside her just to do that. He also puts his head on her leg when he’s laying down just so he’s touching her.

One day my mom had come over to workout with me and as I was getting ready in the washroom I could hear her laughing and I had no idea why. When I came out to investigate, I noticed that he had jumped on the treadmill with her and was going at her pace and actually walking around her to make sure she was ok whereas with me I have to walk around him. I love the trust he has given her. It was funny, cute and heartwarming at the same time.

He’s really good with kids too. At first I was hesitant to have him around my Goddaughter who was only 1 at the time ( he was a puppy and I wasn’t sure how he’d be around her). But he was soooo gentle, he would wait patiently for her to throw the ball to him and would just take it gently from her hand. It’s like he knew he couldn’t play rough with her like he could with my nephews who were older.

I used to have a water cooler by where his food was and when he would run out of water and if I wasn’t paying attention he would hit the water bottles indicating that he wants water. When I removed them, he started scratching at the water cooler, realizing that water comes from there. I thought it was pretty clever and funny that he realized that that was a way to get my attention and to let me know what he wanted. Now he goes and sits by the sink and scratches at the baseboard. It sounds like I never fill his bowl but I do lol He also likes his water fresh and that’s one of the reasons why he does that. If I am gone all day he doesn’t really eat or drink and so I have to empty his bowl and refill it for him.

During COVID I was off work for a couple of months so I was home all day as well all were. He doesn’t really sleep when I’m around, in case he’s going to miss something and so it was almost like when a toddler gets tired and is cranky because they missed there nap. I remember one day he walked from the door into the hallway and looked at me like why are you still here lol huffed and went into my bedroom to sleep just to get away from me lol That was the first time he had done that so I thought it was pretty funny. Like lady I need to sleep and I can’t if you’re here constantly. On a side note, he sleeps pretty much anywhere on the floor and sometimes in his bed. He doesn’t like being too hot and that’s why he’s not big into cuddling.

Why is Smeagol Being Rehomed?

I wish I could keep him but doing so would be selfish. I’ve had him since he was a puppy and I’ll miss him A LOT. But he needs a place with a backyard because he loves being outside, especially when the sun is shinning. I don’t have a backyard and he’s tied out on a leash out front when he wants to be outside which is not ideal. He’s strong for a little guy and has gotten loose which is scary for him, for me and for others. There have also been a lot of cayotes in the neighbourhood as well. I also have a full-time job and a part-time job and I run an Airbnb and I’m also enrolled in school trying to complete my degree. I just don’t have the time for him other than the walks and I feel guilty that he’s home alone so much. There are days where I’m working 16 hour days and only have 30 mins between jobs to let him out and then turn around and go to work and not be back until 11 pm. He’s bored and I think that’s the reason for his high energy. He does settle down after a walk but will still wants to be outside. I’m exhausted from everything and feel massive guilt that I can’t give him the attention he needs and craves.

Smeagol’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

I want someone that will give him the love and attention he needs. I want someone that will have the time to spend with him. He doesn’t need constant attention, he just needs someone that will be around more often. Someone that can take him for walks. Have a backyard so he can spend time outside. He’s very smart and learns quickly. Someone who is patient with him and will take the time to continue his training. Someone that has more experience with pets. He’s my first pet and I think I’m too soft and I’m not a good disciplinarian but he does listen and has learned a lot.

I don’t know what else to tell you. He can shake a paw/high-five (responds to both). He hasn’t mastered a full roll-over but does a half roll lol. All the basic commands, sit, stay, leave it (is a work in progress). His command word is “yes” it’ll get his attention right away or making a “kissing” sound. He does check-ins when we walk and responds to “yes” so that he does do the check-in. I do that where he is distracted most and he has learned that that is where I stop and get a treat. He’s not a slow walker, prefers a fast paced walk. He’s not very food motivated but certain treats he responds to. He doesn’t beg for food. I can leave my plate on the floor with food in it, walk away and he won’t touch it.

I have consulted two trainers, one was via facetime (during COVID) which I didn’t find effective but got some pointers from. Another one made a house visit and gave me more pointers and the command words. He responded well to that. We took him for a walk and she helped me do the check-ins and how to walk away when he’s not responding/is distracted. He knows what find it means (throw some kibble and treats on the ground and tell him to find it to distract him).

He is reactionary to other dogs when on leash. But is good with my friends’ dogs. There are times where I have dropped him off at a friend’s house so he could play with his two dogs (a rottie mix and a terrier mix), they get along really well. My other friend also has a Yorkie/Havanese mix which he gets along well with as well when I look after him. My other friend has a Husky which he got along with but was protective of my Goddaughter when she was around (they husky is hers and they just got him a couple of years ago).

We used to go to the dog park but he was attacked a couple of times so I stopped doing that. He’s better at the bigger dog parks where there are trees and such and he can explore more like Hermitage off leash park. The fenced in ones are not fantastic because there isn’t enough room to avoid the dogs he doesn’t want to be around. He prefers playing with the bigger dogs for some reason.

He’s never been around cats so I’m not sure how he will react. He does react to them when they come in the yard. Loves to run after rabbits. He has scared a coyote or two away even though he’s little. His bark sounds like a big dog bark.

He was crate trained when I first got him but felt bad leaving him in it. We worked on him not being in it and his attitude was better. He didn’t like being in it. The word “house” puts him in check also and I think he associates that with the crate, although the crate wasn’t used as a form of punishment. He doesn’t like closed doors.

I did take him to doggy daycare for a while, twice a week and he was good there as well. I pulled him out because I didn’t like the place and because of my work schedule.
