German shepherd mix adoption san diego

Meet Max, German Shepherd Dog For Adoption in San Diego CA

Have you been looking for German Shepherd Dogs for adoption in San Diego? Please consider offering a loving home to Max the German Shepherd mix. This very special dog is 8 years old and weighs 80 pounds. Max needs a home with someone who can be with him most of the time. He is an Angel with so much love to offer, but separation anxiety makes him unsuitable for people who work away from the home.

Max’s owners love  him a lot, but they are Nurses and must work away from their home. Max becomes very upset when left on his own, and will frantically try to get out of his home, damaging windows and doors in the process, and causing himself harm.

Max does an amazing job of being an emotional support animal. He offers a level of devotion that makes him the perfect candidate for this important job. Finding him a loving home with someone who needs that 24/7 support of a very good dog is the only option for him. If you can offer Max his forever home anywhere within a reasonable distance of San Diego, please reach out today. Max can’t wait to show you the true meaning of unconditional love. Adopt Max today.

Max’s Personality

I love that he
1) chews toys so softly and doesn’t destroy them
2) Walks right next to me and is awesome on the leash
3) Lays in a spot in the kitchen to watch me make dinner
4) Finds and uses pillows like a human
5) Licks the faces of kids

Max’s Current Home Environment

We have a one-bedroom apartment with no balcony right now. It has a spacious living area.

Max’s Current Family:

My husband Kevin and I are both nurses who work the overnight shift. We moved from Minnesota over 3 years ago in order to improve his physical and mental health after having brain surgery to remove a tumor, then gastric bypass. Max has been a wonderful emotional support during his healing process. We adopted him from the San Diego Humane Society in November of 2018.

Max’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Max loves soft stuffed squeaky toys and doesn’t tear them apart. He gently plays tug-of-war with them occasionally, but mostly just likes if you throw them and chase him when he grabs it. He does not like dry treats, but is obsessed with meats and cheese sticks. He eats “Whole-Hearted Salmon and Peas” recipe dry kibble from Petco.

He loves his longer early morning walk and laying at your feet getting his daily pets.

Cute Max Story:

The best is when he meets a kid or baby and just licks their face while they laugh. He does this adorable thing where he grabs a couple of peices of kibble in his mouth and then comes and lays by you and drops them on the carpet and then eats each piece one-by-one. He’s so social!

Why is Max Being Rehomed?

See the behavior issues above – Separation anxiety. Our schedule does not allow for the desensitization training that is needed to work on this. We cannot leave him alone and cannot afford to pay a sitter for the majority of the week when our hours are fluctuating at the hospital. We gave it a good year of trying!

Max’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

We would love to see Max in a home where the owner works from home, or where there are multiple family members that make their schedule work to adjust for not leaving him alone, and can afford the occasional sitter if everyone’s out or on vacation! A nice balcony or outdoor space would be a great plus! He loves to watch the comings and goings, but is not territorial.

Additional Comments:

He is reactive to other large dogs, so we cross the street when walking him and he does just fine with that. Same reason we do not go to dog parks or the beach.
