Meet Wally – Pre-Loved Miniature Schnauzer Terrier mix dog for adoption by Owner in Marietta GA

Wally is a Male Miniature Schnauzer Terrier mix dog for adoption to a very loving home in or near Marietta, GA. This very special dog is 3.5 years old and weighs 37 pounds.

5 Amazing Things About Wally:

1) I love his janky little crooked smile and when that weird tooth gets stuck
2) He’s soft coated, doesn’t shed much and has no dander, so that’s both weird and amazing given what it looks like his breeds are
3) The joy he takes in dive bombing into the cool grass, and rolling around, which is equal to his love for a good mud puddle
4) He will take treats gently, and if he trusts you, he gives you a LOT of leeway in handling him. He may not like something but it takes a LOT for him to express frustration with a growl
5) He is always up for a walk. It’s not always a successful, well-mannered walk, but he never shies away from seeing you grab the leash and your sneakers.

Wally’s owners are very sad to have to rehome their cherished dog, but circumstances beyond their control have made rehoming a must-do.

They are hoping to find the right home where this deserving dog will be loved unconditionally and kept safe, happy, healthy and well-cared-for.

If you have room in your heart and home for Wally, then please offer a loving, forever home today. Wally can’t wait to show you the true meaning of unconditional love.

Sex of Pet: Male
Age of Pet: 3.5
Spayed/Neutered?: Yes
Health Problems: Yes He has a LOT of anxiety that the trainer and vet think was exacerbated by previous abuse (first owner). He has been trying a variety of anxiety solutions; recently we started him on Xanax and that does seem to be helping. Herbal solutions and Trazodone were not quite enough for him.
Behavior Issues: Yes Aforementioned anxiety. Has incredible panic attacks when he sees children and WILL BITE. He’s currently in a 6-ft fenced yard but we do try to walk him as often as possible to physically tire him. Again, more than likely due to previous abuse and possibly why he was surrendered to county shelter last year. If on a walk and no kids, he’s fine. We are still learning leash manners and how to respond to outside stimuli (birds, squirrels, bunnies, etc) as it appears he had no familiarity with being on a leash at all.

Wally’s Personality

Wally is really a very sweet pup who loves other dogs. He enjoys the off leash park in nice weather and is happy to meet new people when there’s affection (and bacon)! He does well with a settled confident pack – we were able to get him up to my friend in North Georgia a few times, and he fell in perfectly with her 4 dogs – no fights, no growls, and followed them wherever they went. Despite what appears to be some abuse or mishandling (he was recovering from a burn on his back when I adopted him last year) he is surprisingly willing to accept strangers ( as long as they are not kids ) He is just as willing to remove himself from any noise when he wants quiet, and curl up for a nap in another room, so there is a level of independence he shows once he’s confident he’s safe. Will be a stage 5 clinger initially.

Wally’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Wally loves a fluffy squeaker (that’s gotta be the schnauzer). He is also happy to keep playing with the ‘carcass’ of the ruined toy as a tug toy. He also LOVES tug. I do limit this as he can be kind of a jerk with it, so when he’s getting thrashy, I stop the play by making him drop his side and sitting.
He loves it at the park when someone has a chuck-it ball. Will give chase with the other dogs and bring it back. Not too impressed when I do it 😛
Food: he loves the big dental kibbles more than normal food. Squeezy cheese and lean turkey deli-style meat are his preferences for pill hiding. Any biscuit is great. Likes apples and watermelon.
Activities – anything with his person/people or other dogs. Loves to go back and forth between trees watching birds and squirrels. Will root around in a strange yard for hours, and if he finds a spot that smells just so, he will try to dig you a new in-ground pool. Happily gets into the car as well. Sleeping– of course he loves a nap. A snuffle or busy toy is good too.

Cute Wally Story:

After his first official grooming (which required some unfortunate ‘manscaping’), he had a hard time getting comfortable with his new cleaned up self, so he rearranged the couch. There is a blanket on it for him, and pillows to lean on, as well as a high quality dog bed right next to it. Wally started rooting the blanket, pulled it up, stuffed it in a ball, knocked all the pillows onto the floor, knocked all the upper couch cushion over and STILL couldn’t get happy. Proceeded to jump down to the dog bed, then pulled THAT blanket off to the floor, and laid on the floor instead of his bed or the couch. Weirdest and funniest 15 minutes I’ve ever watched. Wally follows his own rules.

Why is Wally Being Rehomed?

I live in a neighborhood with kids, and in the interest of being up front, we found out the hard way that Wally Is TERRIFIED of kids. I was told by the shelter that “he ‘didn’t seem to like kids”‘. Ok, lots of dogs aren’t crazy about kids, and I don’t have any.
About 6 months after I got him, he had what equates to an anxiety attack and managed to get out of his lead, where he bit the 8 year old across the street. No growling, no hair raised, just what looked like a LOT of over excitement. Because my homeowner’s insurance paid the claim, he is now a liability that they are not willing to cover and they are not renewing my policy. That means I’ll have to search for new insurance and likely get an additional expensive umbrella coverage as he’s now officially bitten someone.
I suspect strongly that was the reason he was dumped at the shelter, though they did not indicate he was a bite risk nor did I sign any papers indicating I was adopting an animal with a bite history. Per the county shelter, they can only go on what they are told, so if someone lies or does not give the whole story, it’s the adopter who takes the hit. Wally would do great with someone who 1) does not have kids in the home or visiting regularly 2) who has one or more other dogs he can get confidence from, and learn from, and 3) preferably away from things like the school bus stop or in the path of kids walking to the bus or a park. There are just too many triggers in my neighborhood. If it were financially feasible to move, I would do so. If I had a bigger yard and could get him a playmate, I would. It’s just not in the cards right now, and why should he live in a constant state of anxiety if there is a better option? I want him to have the chance to be the good dog I know he can be, as it’s not his fault he was mistreated and set up to fail.

Wally’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

Someone who lives outside of Atlanta, who has some good fenced yard space, with one or more other dogs would be ideal. Out of state is fine – it may be good for him to move to a state where he has a ‘clean slate’.
Patient, calm, and preferably has a history with dogs that have been mistreated.
No kids. Per his trainer, that may never go away. He will always have to be super secured on a walk or kept away from kids, even if he doesn’t react. Right now he uses a gentle leader for walks and then I also attach that to his martingale collar, so should he freak out and detach one, the other is still intact

I’ve had rescue dogs for 20 years, so please know I don’t take this lightly. I first thought about this a year ago (pre-bite) because he did so well, and was so happy with my friends’ pack of doodles. (they aren’t in a position to have another dog). I knew my smaller yard and his young age and nervousness were not the best combo, but I did hope with long daily walks, dog park time and lots of love that things would have settled more. He’s really a sweet dog who was never given a chance to be his best Wally. The pandemic was rough on a lot of people, but especially the dogs who were adopted, mistreated/untrained and then tossed away once things got back to normal and they were unwanted. Wally was set up for failure – mistreated, burned, and then dumped in the county shelter. The county didn’t do him any favors by not asking more questions about the state of him. I don’t want to be the third person who fails this dog.
