Apple’s Personality
Apple is incredibly sweet. She loves to be with her people, snuggle and get pets. She loves to play fetch and believes the person should also participate, so she regularly leaves her ball just out of reach.
She is smart and a little stubborn – if you reach for that slightly too-far-away ball, she will not put it closer to you and will instead try to get you to reach even farther the next time. (She thinks she is your personal trainer, LOL.
She is NOT crate trained and cannot be kept in a crate, as she does not feel comfortable or safe there.
While she does well with teenagers who understand dogs and are gentle and calm with them, she cannot be in a home with young children.
She also gets overwhelmed easily if there are many guests in a home and will need a safe place to hide from the commotion.
She loves to watch out the window and announce passers by, but she is quiet at night and happy to sleep with her people.
If you tend to get up in the middle of the night, she will think it is time to go outside for a pee break.
She loves to sit quietly nearby on a chair while her people work from home.
She needs 3 short walks a day to poop plus a pee break in the afternoon and before bed. She loves to go on short walks, but does need her people to watch out for her, as she sometimes over-exerts herself and her back legs will get overtired and shake.
Apple will be the ideal companion for an active retired person or couple without young grandchildren. Her only issues are children and crowds; she thrives on routine, a little activity, and lots of love and cuddles.
While she has a dog bed and will sleep on it at night, if you’ll allow it, she much prefers to snuggle with you at night.
Apple’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?
She eats a special kibble. I’d have to check the bag.
She also loves chicken and any food scraps she can snag, but they upset her stomach and we keep people food very minimal to avoid diarrhea.
Her favorite activities are fetch, getting dog treats, walks, and playing tug of war with old towels.
Cute Apple Story:
When apple was a puppy we lived in a condo with a very long hallway between our door and our neighbors’. We used to throw tennis balls down the hall for her. Once she caught the first ball, we’d launch a second and she always wanted to catch both. Of course, her mouth was too full, so she’d accidentally drop the first ball, catch the second, drop the second to re-catch the first, and on the scramble would go!
Why is Apple Being Rehomed?
When Apple turned 7, we had our first son. He is not gentle with animals and to this day, tries to show affection by chasing her. It has caused a heartbreaking, unbearable reality that while she loves him and our youngest son dearly (she watches over them with a mothering seriousness).
She also is terrified they will hurt her, and bares her teeth, growls, and snaps at them if they get within a foot of her. Of course, this equally terrifies the kids, and they are afraid to go past her, causing them to get stuck, screaming, in areas of the house. Both kids regularly talk about being scared of her, and they are now both generally afraid of all dogs because of it.
On top of that, our kids are both under 5, and my husband has had to travel a lot for work. I’m not able to keep up with the kids and the dog, and poor Apple regularly gets ignored and isn’t getting the attention or walks she needs.
Apple’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:
A family who has people home during the day to let her out and take her on walks. She is very much a companion animal and needs her people around.
No young children and children must be gentle and kind to animals, and understand that loud voices, running and chasing are not OK for Apple.
A yard with easy access to outdoor space. While Apple spent the first 7 years of her life in a major city where there was constant traffic and no grass, she was born on a horse ranch, and she loves grass and open space. We want her to have a yard and trees and a quiet neighborhood for her old age days.
She prefers to travel with her people or have a live-in dog sitter or a dog-sitter where she stays at their home. She cannot handle a kennel or even an open-play doggy daycare, as she has been attacked too many times in the past.
While she’s ok if her dogsitter goes out during the day, she does not do well if a person only stops by to feed her and let her out but otherwise leaves her alone day and night… she’s a companion animal and needs companionship while her people are traveling.
