Juneau’s Personality
She’s a little shy around people she doesn’t know but warms up quickly. She is always excited to see people she knows, very loving, and loves attention.
She is curious about natural and man-made sounds (she is still learning). She loves to play and does great with children, people, and other dogs. Typical puppy separation anxiety is present, but she’s gotten better with time and training, and she feels comfortable knowing someone she knows is close by or visible at this stage.
Juneau’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?
Toys: Nylabones/real bones, rope-based & squeaker chew toys, large Pupsicle ball with refillable Pupsicle pops (the pops last longer when frozen)
Foods: Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Food, Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe; Blue Buffalo Bits Soft & Chewy Training Treats, Beef Recipe
Activities: Playing with his older Malamute brother, napping, going on walks, playing fetch, more napping, and doing a few high-speed laps in the living room.
Cute Juneau Story:
Juneau loves attention and snuggling up with us and her older brother Breck, our 9-year-old Alaskan Malamute. They wrestle around, talk to each other, and nap together often. When my wife and I first got her, she looked like a little bear cub (we affectionately call her “Juneau-Bear” sometimes) and she was the best car passenger on the 12-hour car ride home, sleeping curled up in my wife’s lap or in the back seat puppy bed. She absolutely loves to be petted and have her back & butt scratched. Whenever I get home, she’s always so excited! She’ll go through the “car wash” by walking in between my legs, stopping halfway through so you pet her…gotta pay that “pet Juneau” toll before I can sit down at the end of the day.
Why is Juneau Being Rehomed?
My wife Gwen got Juneau in August 2024 to keep her company when she was stuck at home during her clinical trial medication treatments for metastatic pancreatic cancer. Since she was responding well to treatment at that point, we thought we had a decent amount of time to raise Juneau through her puppy development stages, but a month later in September, we were informed that Gwen’s treatment was no longer working as intended. She was incredibly fortunate enough to qualify for a second clinical trial, which bought us some more time together. Unfortunately, however, the worst came to pass in December when Gwen developed a severe liver infection secondary to her cancer, and she sadly passed away on January 10th of this year.
Juneau has brought us such joy and is extremely loved, but with my re-introduction to work following my wife’s passing and an untimely ruptured distal biceps tendon repair surgery two weeks ago, among some other immovable factors, I am unable to fully give Juneau the care and attention she needs to thrive. I work in the private & corporate executive protection industry in the Greater Seattle Area (averaging about 10-12 hours a day away from home, including commute, Mon-Fri), and due to the onsite requirement & responsibilities of my job, bringing a dog to work is generally frowned upon.
I tried fostering her recently with some close friends of ours for about two weeks, but both of them have just acquired new jobs, making it impossible for them to look after Juneau appropriately. This necessitated my taking her back this week, and I am unable to enroll her in dog daycare locations because she has not yet been spayed (she is currently in the middle of her first heat cycle, with most vets recommending spaying large breed puppies in the 9-12 month window).
I feel that with my current onsite work-week schedule, post-surgery disposition, and upcoming physical therapy needs, Juneau deserves more & better than I can currently give her. It’s my sincere hope that she can be adopted into a great home so she can continue to live a very love-filled life with a family or person who can give her what she needs in these early months of her life and beyond.
Juneau’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:
Since Juneau is still in her puppy years, it would be ideal if someone were at home for a large portion of the day to keep an eye on her (stay-at-home folks, remote workers, retirees, etc.). She gets along great with other dogs, is still somewhat curious about cats (at least my daughter’s two cats), and is friendly with children.
An individual or family with prior experience in raising Alaskan Malamutes who has the time, patience, and flexibility required is highly preferred. From my experience with our 9-year-old Malamute, they typically aren’t fans of being crated for extended periods of time, and she (like Breck) has broken out of her metal crate a time or two already without additional carabiner reinforcement.
She isn’t yet at the age where she can be left alone without some sort of reinforced crate or room that can be locked. Four hours has been the longest amount of time in her crate with carabiners in place. Overall, I’m looking for her to feel as loved and looked after as she has been with us.
