Maverick’s Story: The Little Shadow With a Heart the Size of Alberta
If love could be measured in tail wags, Maverick would register somewhere between “perpetual motion machine” and “tiny, fluffy metronome of joy.” This pup doesn’t just want to be loved—he is love, incarnate. The kind of love that plops its whole fuzzy body across your lap, gazes up at you with those big “Do you feel it too?” eyes, and then promptly falls asleep with one paw still reaching for your heart.

Maverick is four and a half months old, and despite his puppyhood being off to a rough start (we’ll get to that in a second), he’s a world-class snuggler, a fetch fanatic, and possibly the most resilient little fluffball to ever land in Edmonton.
He’s a mix of Australian Shepherd and Australian Cattle Dog (Heeler) —basically, he’s got brains, bounce, and a work ethic that borders on adorable obsession. His favorite hobby? Playing fetch. His second favorite? Playing fetch. Third? You guessed it—fetch. If reincarnation exists, this boy was probably a tennis ball in his last life.
Maverick is also startlingly intuitive. One day, during a rough moment, his foster mom found herself crying quietly on the couch. Maverick—still new to her home, still figuring out the world—climbed up beside her, pressed his soft little muzzle into her face, and gently licked away her tears. No barking. No chaos. Just Maverick, doing what Maverick does best: showing up with his whole heart.
And here’s the part that gets you. This beautiful, joyful puppy was once tied to a fence and left behind by people who didn’t see his worth. He was underweight, underloved, and under-socialized.
But not for long. Because Maverick decided—quietly and steadfastly—not to let that shape him. Instead of carrying around a chip on his shoulder, he carries toys. And instead of fear, he radiates faith… that people are good, that the world is fun, and that someone out there is going to love him the way he was meant to be loved.
His foster mom has been his safe place for the last month and a half, giving him the chance to learn what love really looks like. She’d keep him forever if she could—but with two dogs of her own, she knows Maverick deserves a family where he can be the center of attention, not one of the crowd. A big yard or an acreage would be Heaven for him, but more than anything, he just wants people—his people—to throw a ball, share a couch, and be his forever.
Maverick is healthy, vaccinated, housebroken, crate trained, and has no behavioral issues—just a little food sensitivity (no chicken, please!) and a preference for slow introductions to other dogs. But really, what he wants most is you.
So if you’re reading this with a little tug in your chest and a smile sneaking across your face, maybe Maverick is tugging on your heartstrings for a reason. Maybe you’re exactly who he’s been waiting for.
Click that Apply to Adopt button. He’s ready to be your shadow, your playmate, your four-legged therapist, and your best friend.
Because love like this doesn’t come around often. And it rarely comes wrapped in fur this soft. 🐾

Maverick’s Personality
Mav is amazing. He is such a loving puppy anyone would be SO lucky to have him. He came from a poor situation where his previous owners didn’t want to deal with him so they tied him to a fence and left him there. He was far too skinny and did not expose him to proper dog-dog interactions. Regardless of all of this he is such a resilient and wonderful puppy and has no behavioural issues that would affect him as he grows.
Maverick’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?
Balls, balls, and more balls! He would play fetch all day if you let him. He is a fast little guy!!
Cute Maverick Story:
There’s the age old saying that dogs can feel our emotions. Well, one day I was having a really bad day and was shedding a few tears. Mav plopped right up onto the couch beside me and started licking my tears away – immediate smile on my face!
Why is Maverick Being Rehomed?
I have been personally fostering him for about 1.5 months. I already have 2 of my own and want to ensure that Mav gets all the attention he deserves.
Maverick’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:
Due to Mav’s working breed, he would be best fit with a really nice big backyard or on an acreage.

🐾 What makes Maverick special?
He’s affection on four legs. Maverick is incredibly loving — the kind of dog who would climb inside your skin if he could. He adores lap cuddles, face kisses, and emotional check-ins (he has been known to gently lick away tears). He’s also smart, goofy, endlessly loyal, and obsessed with playing fetch.
🧬 What is Maverick’s breed mix like?
Maverick is a blend of Australian Shepherd and Heeler — two working breeds known for their intelligence, energy, and devotion to their humans. This means he’s:
- Highly trainable
- Very active
- Emotionally intuitive
- Likely to form deep bonds
🧠 Is Maverick trained?
He’s off to an excellent start! So far:
- ✅ Housebroken
- ✅ Crate trained
- ✅ Knows some basic commands
- ✅ Walks well on leash with a bit of guidance
- ✅ Great at fetch
- ✅ Sleeps through the night
🧸 What are his favorite toys and games?
Balls. Balls. More balls. Throw it once, he’ll love you. Throw it 50 times, and he’ll worship the ground you walk on. He also enjoys soft squeaky toys, tug toys, and safe chews (he’s still teething!).
🥩 What does Maverick eat?
Maverick is currently on a chicken-free kibble due to a suspected chicken allergy. He’s thriving on it and doing well. His future home should avoid chicken-based foods unless cleared with a vet.
🧑⚕️ What is Maverick’s health status?
- 🩺 Up to date on vaccinations
- 🐶 Not yet neutered (adopter will handle at appropriate age)
- 💊 No known health issues aside from a sensitivity to chicken
🧑🤝🧑 How is Maverick with other dogs?
He loves other dogs but needs slow, controlled introductions. He didn’t receive ideal socialization as a young pup, but he’s learning quickly and gaining confidence every day.
🐱 How is Maverick with cats?
Unknown. He hasn’t lived with cats during foster care. With proper supervision and training, he may adjust to cat life.
👶 How is Maverick with children?
Wonderful! He’s affectionate, gentle, and tolerant. Supervision is recommended (as with all puppies) while he’s learning not to jump or nibble in excitement.
🏡 What kind of home does Maverick need?

- Or an acreage/rural property
- Active adopters who enjoy walks, training, and play
