Health Problems: allergies
Pip is allergic to a lot, we have had testing done. He is not however allergic to proteins that are normal. Biggest surprise allergies are corn, oat, peanut, pumpkin, rice, flax.

Otherwise health is very good.
Behavior Issues: Yes
Pip has separation anxiety in that he always wants to be with his owner. Additionally he is highly vocal and anxious to new external stimulants- people or animals. He wants to greet them(people) or chase them (animals) but he is very vocal and actively tries to pursue access, so he can get up on walls, etc to try and see/ get to the stimulus.

We have worked with a behaviorist and have him on medication but the more we read about his breed and his tendencies we feel like our home and lifestyle just aren’t a good fit to make him happy. He needs to be able to go out and run and chase and bark, and have an owner that will encourage and/or engage Pip to live in a happy way.

Pip’s Personality

The AKC description of the treeing walker coonhound is pretty spot on for Pip. He is a huge cuddler that wants to sleep with you or on your feet and will if you let him. He is really smart, but stubborn so he needs consistency with his commands and does really well with routine.

He is trainable, but is afraid of beeps (our behaviorist will tell you this is because of the beep associated with his ecollar training (by professionals)), so we have been instructed to stop using an ecollar and our invisible fence although he behaved well with the fence consistently. Pip wants to be outside chasing and barking, or snuggled up sleeping next to his owner. A distant third is playing with our other dog, which he will do but he prefers to be running/chasing or sleeping.

We have had Pip since we rescued him at 12 weeks old, he is sweet and great with kids, people and other dogs. If we had a fenced in three acres that he could roam or jobs where we didn’t require him to be quiet for long periods of time we may not be looking to rehome him. He is basically a 60 lb muscular laptop that wants to let you know if anything is present that is not the owner, and then go chase/greet it.

Why is Pip Being Rehomed?

Ultimately, we feel that Pip can’t be happy in our home because he is either afraid of or wants to engage with all of the external stimuli present. This means that if he hears the mail truck drive by, he starts being very vocal about it. If he actually sees a squirrel or a deer he is active in trying to pursue it and will not calm down until he knows it is gone.

Our house is basically all windows and so he is stimulated (anxious or afraid) all of the time. My wife works from home and is unable to quiet Pip in some instances which causes issues. Additionally, anything that we do has to center around whether Pip will be loud and “crazy” and it just isn’t something that we can train out of him.

We have 3 acres but very little of it is fenced, and he doesn’t respond well to Ecollar so he just doesn’t get to get out and run and sniff and be the dog he was born to be. When Pip gets to the point that he has been able to run and live outside for a while and/or the sun goes down and he can’t see outside he is quite enjoyable and a big cuddler but the daily lifestyle that he needs and we need are not compatible.

Our family, and in particular my wife, is heartbroken that we need to move to this solution. We have come to the conclusion that Pip’s personality and behavior just aren’t something that our day to day lives can accommodate and that is unfair to him. We have had hound dogs in our family for the last 18 years but Pip is just not able to settle into the behaviors that we have to have to function in our daily lives. Pip has a short coat and does get cold so we would even be interested in rehoming somewhere that is a bit warmer than St. Louis, MO if the right fit exists.
