George’s Personality

I rescued George from the SPCA in penticton, BC in May 2016. He was a stray in the kootneys prior to that, with no background or history. They estimated his age was about 4 at that time, however he acted more like 2, so who knows. He’s either 7 or 9 right now lol.

He is as smart as they come. He has been known to let himself out of kennels at daycare and boarding and then let’s the other dogs out too! He can open cupboards and find food anywhere. He is 100% food motivated. The vet said he was most likely abandoned inside and starved in his previous life, thus he has a bit of separation anxiety which causes him to scoure the house for food once you leave. In saying that, he has been left alone lots and does not bark or whine, and is not destructive as long as the garbage, recycling and all countertop food is secured.

He loves humans more than dogs. He slept with me until I was pregnant, and then slept with either my husband or 8 year old step daughter afterwards. He needs to feel part of the family. He tolerated the family cat for years, but does have a tendency to chase other animals in the wild (including putdoor cats)-however no incidents have been noted.

I believe he was some sort if guard dog, as he is incredibly protective of the women on the family. If he senses bad energy or uncertainty he can react. He has reacted (lunging and barking) at other ethnicities (people of color), other dogs while on leashes, and even a child once. Again no incidences and all on leash. He is great with our 9 year old, but seems anxious of her and lots of kids are running around and he will bark or lunge while watching play. He has been great with our 8 month old so far, but now he’s crawling and starting to walk, George seems confused and it looks at times as though he might try to mount in confusion.

He loves running and sniffing. He hikes daily with us, and loves the outdoors. He’s not a fan of fetch or toys-but joining the family for a car ride, hike or walk, or snuggling all day are his jam. He’s lived with other dogs, and it’s been fine, but he doesn’t seem to care much for play as he dies humans. The dog daycare often says George just hung put with them and not the dogs lol. With other dogs he doesn’t know, he does try to mount. He is more of a dominant dog.

He is most suitable to a person or people without kids, who perhaps have the ability to take him to work or work from home (would be ideal but not necessary as he goes to daycare regularly anyways-as long as he’s not left alone regularly for 8 or more hours all week), and who can give him plenty of outdoor time. He will not thrive or work for someone who wants to crate him all day, although he has been crated at night, as long as the crate is in the bedroom he is peachy.

Most people that meet him comment on what a beautiful and well behaved dog George is. He is smart. He has been trained and pager trained extensively. He is so loving and loves attention and pets/cuddles from people. He is loyal and just a heart warming blessing to have as a companion and a hiking buddy or just a reading/Netflix cuddle buddy! We have been known to just cuddle for an hour in bed after waking! He loves adventure and swimming (even paddle boarding!), and will follow you to the ends if the earth. He loves running and exploring in the woods or wide open spaces. He does best on walks with the anti pulling leash and is so easy to walk with the strap over his nose, as long as the individual is aware of his quirks while outwalking-he is easy to walk. In the woods we use the pager off leash, as he does have a tendency to chase wild animals. He likes to work as well. We often have a backpack strapped to him, and I bet he would be a great farm dog. Other people who have cared for him have mentioned he seems like he’s a working dog.

Down below I havent ticked off that he gets along with older kids, dogs, cats or small animals as I just can’t say individually. He has lived with a cat and that was fine. He has lived with a child and that was fine. I would say he’s fine with older kids in their teens as they wont be playing erratically. I would day most likely he’ll be fine woth a cat or another dog as he’s lived with both, but I cannot vouch for that. He is a lot of work, like any dog really. And I just don’t want to see him going to a niave family (as I’ve seen so much in the past with dog owners) who don’t have a realistic perspective of just how much attention, care and devotion a dog needs.

Why is George Being Rehomed?

George has been with me for 5 years and has traveled all across Canada and back. He has been my shadow and soul dog-coming with me everywhere. However, my infant son has been having a lot of allergic symptoms, and it has been recommended we rehome George by our GP to aid with his symptoms. George has also been displaying signs of anxiety with the new addition to our family, and we do not want any incidents to either baby or dog as they can’t understand each others body language

I’ve listed every trait I know George to have in order to give you the most respect for the type of person/home George will need. I have no doubt he will fit in with someone(s) wonderfully as long as he receives the care and attention and love he thrives on. He adores people. And as long as he’s part of the family, everything will be great. He is a charmer and he will steel hearts. I just want everyone to have as much information about him as possible so there are no surprises. He is healthy and fit as a fiddle. Hes jad his annual vet visit and immunizations and given a very good clean bill of health, even his teeth. He has no joint dysfunction or hip dysplasia at all. He’s a tough pup and seems to have a good genes (except his teeth which we suspect he broke trying to get put of crates in another life)
