Maine Coon Mix Cat for Adoption in Augusta, GA

Looking for a Maine Coon Mix cat to adopt in Augusta, GA? Just 1.5 yrs old and weighing 11lbs, Hugo has been fully vaccinated, fixed, microchipped and litter box trained. Hugo is good with people of all ages, and with cat-friendly dogs.

Hugo is the sweetest cat you will ever meet. He is gentle and is fine being picked up and cuddled once he gets to know you. He is playful and very cute – a great companion for an older child or a senior looking for an affectionate pet.

Hugo was a stray that was taken in by his guardian. Unfortunately, his guardian’s other cats are attacking him, and when he was found, he was covered in bites and scratches from other feral cats. It is thought that Hugo must have been abandoned by his original owners, as he is so friendly towards humans. Hugo has FIV, which is an immunodeficiency disease that affects some cats.

Hugo’s owners are very sad to have to rehome their cherished cat. They are hoping to find a new home for Hugo where this special cat will be cherished and kept safe, happy, and healthy for life.

If you have room in your heart and home for Hugo, please complete our online meeting request form. Once received, our Augusta Cat Rehoming team will make arrangements for you to meet Hugo and his/her owners. Adopt Hugo today!

There is a $25.00 adoption processing fee. Supplies, accessories, and veterinary records will be included.

Hugo is FIV+. He was a stray we took in and we treated for ear mites, tape worms, and fleas. He is FIV+ so has some respiratory issues associate with that.
Behavior Issues: Yes
Unlikely to do well with other cats. Our cats are territorial so they do not get along. He may be okay with cats with an easier temperament, but Hugo was found with many bites/marks from other cats in the wild so that may make him hostile/fearful of other cats. Possible he could learn to cohabitate with other animals if introduced properly.
Gets along with: respectful children, cat-friendly dogs
Pet is: Fixed, vaccinated, litter-box trained
Food: Hills Science Diet
Wet food: Hill’s Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Urinary Care Stress Chicken & Vegetable Stew Canned Cat Food, 2.9-oz.

Dry food: Hill’s Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Urinary Care Stress with Chicken Dry Cat Food

He gets 1 can of wet food twice a day (7-8am and 4-5pm) and 1/4 cup dry food around 9:30pm.
Once a day he also needs to get a powder supplement called Immuquin with his wet food. His food can probably be changed off of the prescription as this is what we are feeding our cats, he has not had any history of urinary issues.

Hugo’s Personality

Hugo is very sweet with people and is very fun to play with. He is very enthusiastic about playing and will chase and jump for a toy with lots of energy. He loves sunbathing on the window ledge and watching all the exciting things going on.

Hugo doesn’t mind being picked up and will allow people he trusts to hold him. He is also very cuddly with people he trusts and will lay on your lap for hours. He loves to talk, is friendly with people, and enjoys getting affection (especially jowl scratches). Hugo is always happy to see his foster parents and enjoys spending time with them.

He does have anxiety around food (since he was found starving), so playing with him around mealtime is essential.

Why is Hugo Being Rehomed?

Hugo is a stray that we have fostered for about 6 months. He is unchipped and we have not been able to locate a prior owner. He is a very sweet boy and we love him dearly, but we have 2 cats already that are territorial and we have not been able to successfully integrate all of them. The situation is causing too much stress for everyone so he would be better off in a different home.

Hugo is a special needs cat as he is FIV positive and would likely do best in a home with no other cats. However, a home with non-territorial and easy going cats could also be a good place for him if he is properly, slowly, and safely introduced to the other cats. However, Hugo will need to be strictly indoor since he is more prone to infection and will need to go to the vet at least twice a year and at any sign of illness.

FIV is a very manageable condition and is not transferable to dogs or people and extremely rarely transferred among positive and negative cats who get along.

Sadly, many cats with FIV are put down due to lack of information and lingering stigmas that are not fact based (here is a link with more information https://vbspca.com/what-you-should-know-when-adopting-an-fiv-positive-cat/?fbclid=IwAR2YM8t5r0f9h9BVKkwj-MPu2n53ob2WetNQ0GG8U696mubsznIwPcwz7Bs).
