Barkley - lab doberman pinscher mix for adoption 6

Here is what my owners love the most about me:

1. Loving. He always loves to be rubbed and connect with you.
2. Intelligent. He learns quickly and is very responsive.
3. Loyal. Once he finds his “person” he will follow them around and watch out for them.
4. Adorable. He has the cutest, most expressive eyebrows! Looking at him alway s brings a smile to my face.
5. Trusting. He will let you brush his teeth and not growl or back off!

Barkley is in a difficult situation. At his age, he just wants some peace and quiet, a devoted human or two to adore, and a soft dog bed to snuggle up in when he feels the urge. He is still fairly active, but he doesn’t have the patience for children or other dogs that he used to.

Unfortunately, Barkley’s home now includes two small and very active toddlers, both of whom make him extremely nervous. Barkley has nipped one of the boys as a warning when he came too near, possibly because Barklety  may have some age-related aches and pains and was being defensive.

Barkley needs to be placed in a quiet, adults only home where he can feel safe and happy without little ones in the midst or dogs jumping on him. He is such a loving and devoted dog – the perfect companion for retired dog lovers in a home with a securely fenced yard.

Please offer this sweet senior dog the loving home he needs and deserves today.

Barkley’s Current Home Environment

We live in a single family home with a gated yard. We have twin toddlers and no other pets. Barkley sleeps on his bed and is not allowed on the furniture.

Barkley’s Current Family:

My husband and I adopted Barkley when he was 2 1/2 years old. We found him on Craigslist. He fit into our family right away and adjusted quickly. About three years ago (when Barkley was 8 years old) we had twins. Now the kids are almost three years old. They are not allowed to touch him without our supervision and we are vigilant about them giving him space. We love Barkley and have provided him with a lot of loving care and a great home. I work in public health and my husband works in policy. We live in a neighborhood in Seattle.

Barkley’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Barkley’s favorite toy is his stuffed soccer ball. He loves to play catch with his plastic ball and thrower. He is really food motivated and will eat anything. We do not feed him table food, but he loves his dog food and doggy treats. He loves to be rubbed and pet. He likes to be in the room with you while you are doing whatever it is you do! Barkley is used to going on walks twice a day (morning and night), and being let out to pee before bedtime. He eats twice a day. He is very easy going and generally doesn’t need much more. He can be left alone in the house for long stretches of time but loves company the best.

Cute Barkley Story:

Barkley is very sensitive to our feelings. I remember one morning I got some really sad medical news and I started to cry. Barkley came right over to me and put his head on my knee, then he let me cry into his fur for as long as I needed to. It is hard to stay upset when he is there. Every day I come home I look forward to seeing him. He will greet you at the door like you are the most important person in the world.

Why is Barkley Being Rehomed?

This is a very difficult decision for us. We love Barkley like a member of our family. But in the past six months he bit my son on his arm and bit another dog in doggy daycare – unprovoked. This is is not typical for him and we feel he is telling us that he would like to be in an environment that isn’t so loud and busy and filled with dogs and kids. We had been sending him to doggy day care to give him space from the kids but that is no longer an option after this dog bite.

In general, Barkley is more of a reactive dog, even before he had kids, he would lunge at dogs on walks. We have been working with him with a trainer for years and had a lot of progress. If we didn’t have young kids we would be keeping him, but we just don’t feel confident in our ability to help him and ensure that he won’t bite one of the kids again. It is a risk we are painfully unable to take.

Barkley’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

We are looking for a loving, warm, calm home for our dog! The ideal family and home does not have young children and does not have other dogs. With cats, he often cries when he sees them, so we are not sure if a cat would be a problem or not. We want a family who will keep Barkley until the end of his life, who will love him and give him all the care that he needs. We want him to be with a family that does not hit or physically discipline their dog.

Additional Comments:

We would like to be contacted only:
1. To make sure he is settling in ok after a month or so
2. If for some reason his new family has to give him up. We would like to make sure his is not given to a shelter and can find a good new home.
3. To be notified when he passes away.

Otherwise, we think it is too painful for us and confusing for him to be in touch.
