Looking for a Cocker Spaniel x Schnauzer Mix Dog to adopt in Calgary, Alberta? Just 5 years old and weighing 60 pounds, Jasper has been fixed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, house-trained and leash trained. Jasper is great with adults and respectful older children.
Jasper is being fostered by a family who are hoping to find a new home for Jasper where this special dog will be cherished and kept safe, happy, and healthy for life. He’s a great dog, but does need a home where there will be no other pets. He is very dog-reactive, so he’s not a dog you can take to the dog park. If taking him for a walk, he needs to be kept on a short leash, and care must be taken when encountering other dogs on the pathway or sidewalk.

Jasper feels that it is very important to guard his home and family. He can be pretty barky when the strangers pass by the house. When properly introduced to people in his home where his family is present, he is fine. It is important to tread cautiously when meeting folks in unfamiliar settings, however.

We brought Jasper to Calgary, hoping that he’ll find a wonderful home here, with people who will appreciate his affectionate and loyal qualities, while giving him the training he needs to becomes less reactive to other dogs. We received him from a family who had adopted Jasper, only to find he did not get along with their other smaller dog. We thought we would see if Jasper could have better luck finding a new home here, and have noticed that he is reactive to ALL dogs. He also has separation anxiety, and will do best in a home where someone is home most of the time.
With people, Jasper is a brilliant companion— gentle, loving, excellent with older children, fits into the “pack” with both me and my husband, and is house-trained, tattooed and neutered (info from previous family.). We have taught him to sit, stay, give each paw, lie down, and he is very good on leash when there are no distractions (dogs.). He is great in the car, and also rings the bell we hung on our front door, when he needs to go outside! He sleeps well through the night on his dog bed, and is attentive and bonds easily to his people.
Due to his extreme reactivity, we are not the right fit for him, in spite of how much we already love him. We live in an area with so many dogs, and it is simply impossible for us to keep avoiding random pass-by’s of other folks walking their pets. Jasper is a true lover of people, very smart, very loving, and would be a wonderful friend and protector/guard dog for someone who does not live near so many other dogs. We are very sad to rehome him, but we know that as a foster family, we will do our best to prepare him for his forever home!

We just started him on a chicken and plant-based (grain free) kibble, as suggested by our local pet supply store. (I’m afraid I don’t know the brand, as my husband put it all into a big Tupperware container.)
He gets 1.5 cups at breakfast and dinner, and an extra 1/2 cup around lunch. He uses a maze bowl to help slow him down and encourage chewing!

Jasper’s Personality
Very attentive, loving, protective, excellent with people, older children, cuddly, loves belly rubs, affectionate, good with men and women, very trainable on leash etiquette when no other dogs are present, very good manners regarding feeding time, gentle taking treats, etc.
Anxious when people leave the house, and when he hears noises (people, dogs, sudden noises) outside. Eager to please – in 2 days, I have begun to teach him to stay, wait, walk close to me on a short leash with much less pulling, and lie down.
Jasper cannot be off leash. He cannot go to a dog park. He is very, very strong, and becomes extremely reactive around other dogs.
Despite this, it is still very difficult for us to rehome him, even though that was our original intent — he is so loving and lovable. He will make an excellent dog for the right people.
