Five Things You’ll Love About Skittles

1. She has her own special handshake.
When Skittles likes you, she’ll headbutt your hand. It’s her unmistakably feline way of saying hello.

2. She’s an excellent conversationalist.
Skittles doesn’t see why humans should do all the talking. She’ll happily carry on a conversation in meows.

3. She actually comes when called — Skittles style.
Forget shouting her name across the house. Click your tongue and this clever girl knows you’re talking to her.

4. She’s a champion blanket burrower.
When it’s cold, Skittles loves crawling underneath the sheets and settling in somewhere warm and cozy.

5. She appreciates togetherness without needing constant attention.
Skittles is independent enough to enjoy time on her own, but she also genuinely enjoys having her favorite person nearby.

A Cat With Personality to Spare

Skittles’ story began in Tucson, Arizona, where she was found abandoned as a kitten underneath RVs.

That little street-smart kitten grew into a confident, adaptable adult cat who has done very well with apartment living and doesn’t need an enormous home to be happy.

What she does need is companionship on her terms.

Skittles is food-motivated and takes a keen interest in whatever happens to be on your plate. She enjoys both wet and dry food and is particularly fond of Purina.

She loves a good string-toy session and cardboard scratching boards. She’ll occasionally tear around the room with a case of the zoomies, but she’s equally accomplished at the fine art of napping near her person.

She’s also wonderfully expressive.

Skittles likes interacting with people and can be quite social. Once she’s comfortable with someone, she’ll seek them out, talk to them, sleep nearby and make herself very much a part of everyday life.

Skittles Has Boundaries — And It’s Important That Her Adopter Understand Them

We believe successful adoptions begin with honesty, so there is something prospective adopters need to understand about Skittles.

Skittles experiences petting-induced overstimulation.

She can actively seek affection — approaching someone, headbutting and asking to be petted — but eventually reach a point where she’s had enough. If interaction continues beyond that point, she may respond by scratching or biting.

Her current owner has learned to understand her signals, and Skittles has been consistently gentle with him for a long time. The behavior is more likely to occur with people she doesn’t yet know well, particularly while she’s adjusting to someone new.

She may give signals such as a flicking tail, ears beginning to rotate backward or a brief stiffening of her body. An experienced cat person who notices those cues and simply ends the interaction can help Skittles feel heard and safe.

This isn’t something we want to minimize, nor is it a reason to overlook everything wonderful about her.

It simply means Skittles isn’t the right cat for everyone.

She needs someone who understands that affection doesn’t have to mean unlimited touching. Her ideal person will allow her to initiate contact, keep petting sessions relatively short, notice when she’s had enough, and give her plenty of time to develop trust in her new surroundings.

For a cat-savvy adopter, those are very reasonable boundaries.

The Day Skittles Became a Master’s Thesis Co-Author

Skittles has impeccable timing.

Her owner adopted her around the pandemic era, so she became thoroughly accustomed to seeing him talking to people on a computer screen.

Eventually, it was time for him to present his Master’s thesis online.

This was important stuff: he was in the middle of explaining his design for a space station when Skittles apparently concluded that the presentation required feline expertise.

He could see her preparing to make her move.

He tried discreetly shooing her away with his foot while continuing the presentation.

Skittles was undeterred.

Up onto the desk she jumped — directly in front of the camera — placing herself squarely in the middle of his Master’s thesis presentation.

There was only one reasonable response.

He introduced her to everyone as:

“This is my co-author, Skittles.”

Everyone laughed.

Skittles remained entirely unapologetic.

We suspect she still believes the degree was a collaborative achievement.

Why Is Skittles Being Rehomed?

Skittles is deeply loved, and this is not a decision her owner wanted to make.

His girlfriend has developed severe allergies to cat dander that are triggering asthma symptoms. The family has tried numerous ways of managing the allergies, including air filtration, anti-allergen products, specialized cat food and allergy medication.

Unfortunately, those efforts haven’t solved the problem.

Her owner would happily have kept Skittles for the rest of her life if circumstances allowed it. Instead, he’s making the difficult decision to find her a home where she can continue being cherished without someone’s health being compromised.

There is no shortage of love for Skittles in her present home.

This adoption is about finding a safe place for that love to continue.

Skittles’ Perfect Home

We’re looking for a special person for this special cat.

Skittles’ ideal adopter will have previous experience living with cats and understand that cats communicate through body language as much as they do through meows.

A quieter adult household would be wonderful. A home with respectful older children aged 8+ may also be considered, provided the adults understand Skittles’ boundaries and interactions are appropriately supervised.

Skittles should not live with dogs.

Her history with other cats isn’t known, and because she benefits from a calm environment where she can establish her territory and relationship at her own pace, we believe she would be happiest as the only pet in the home.

Most importantly, her adopter needs patience.

Don’t expect Skittles to walk into a strange home and immediately behave as though she’s lived there forever.

Give her somewhere safe to decompress. Let her explore. Talk to her. Play with her. Learn her signals. Let her decide when she’s ready for affection.

Give Skittles time to choose you.

That’s when the magic happens.

Someone who understands that Skittles has opinions, boundaries and an enormous personality packed into twelve beautiful pounds of cat.

If that sounds a little like you, perhaps you’ve just found each other.
