Penny’s Personality

Penny is loving and very sweet. She likes to run outside, explore chew, sticks and chase squirrels, but as soon as she tires out quickly is very happy just snuggling on the couch with the family.

She is good in her crate for extended periods of time, does not show separation anxiety, but does like to be around people. She sleeps in her crate and is quite a kisser.

Penny’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Penny has a bear and a crab toy she loves to carry around the house. She is good with chew toys, doesn’t shred them to bits.

Penny is good with any food or treats when given by human hands. Penny likes to chase balls, find and chew sticks. She absolutely loves car rides and going on field trips to the pet store, Lowes or the park.

Cute Penny Story:

Penny loves getting in the car for a ride. The other day I had the back end of my 4-runner open, so she hopped in. When I came back I didn’t see her, so I closed it back.

I walked around for a bit with our other dog and didn’t see her for a bit. I thought to myself, surely not. But as I thought, when I went back to the truck, she had hopped over the seat and was sitting patiently in the passenger seat waiting to go for an adventure.

Why is Penny Being Rehomed?

The main reason for rehoming Penny is in home aggression with our other female dog. Any fight that has happened has been over an  item of value (food, treats, toys).
When we originally adopted her, we were told by the shelter she was “not good with other dogs.” But as she had been at the shelter and during our meet and greet, we did not see any worrisome behavior.
On different occasions either in the house or at daycare she exhibited dog aggressive behavior when there was an item of value involved and she was highly stressed.
Moving forward we sent Penny to a 3-week board and train which really helped her learn obedience and discipline / basic commands. For many of her issues it really helped her self-control and created more structure for her in how to be in the house. We just didn’t include stressors, like access to the kitchen with our other dog, eating together or even toys.
We were actually doing very well for several months, letting the two dogs run around outside together and sit in the living room together under watch.
But two nights after Thanksgiving with a lot going on decorating the house for Christmas, we did not read the signals. Penny went after our other dog just because she was stressed and wanted her bed and toy that had been in the room earlier that day. We made the decision that for her to thrive stress free she did not need the competition of another dog.

Penny’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

A family that realizes that Penny has had a hard start, but based on the work we have done with her, would thrive highly in a home environment as a companion animal.
She probably would do better with older kids who understand that a dog can be an excellent friend, but also know that there are boundaries in what is right or wrong when it comes to owning a dog.
She would be OK with the right type of cat. We have one dominant male she does not get along with, and one docile female that she does.

As a summary, Penny is such a sweetheart and would bring tons of joy to the right family. It is important for us to place her in a forever home as the decision to part ways has been very difficult for our family.

So finding the right people is essential for us moving forward. She would be an excellent co-pilot for any lifestyle where she could be with a family that truly appreciates her for the silly, loving girl she is.
