All About Dez – Dachshund Mix Dog For Adoption in Austin TX

Name of Pet: Dez
Location: Austin, TX, 78730
Type of Pet: Dog
Breed of Pet: Dachshund mix
Sex of Pet: Male
Age of Pet: 4 years
Spayed/Neutered?: Yes
Health Problems: Yes Dez has a broken front left leg, but the vet said it may never bother him and did not recommend surgery unless it greatly effected his quality of life, which she said it may never. She did suggest keeping his weight within normal limits. He also has a “catch” in his back right leg, but the vet said this is like being double jointed. Despite both conditions, he loves his walks and enjoys running around in the dog park with my dog walker and her dog.
Behavior Issues: Yes He has a mild growl when he encounters dogs he is unfamiliar with, but it ends after the fourth growl. We have many dogs in our apartment complex, and there are only two that he strongly reacts to by lunging on his leash and barking. It is very short lived; once he barks five times he’s usually done.

He also inconsistently reacts to some people when we are on our walks with the same behavior of a mild bark.

When he first meets someone in our home he may bark and try to jump up, but he calms very quickly, within minutes.

He likes to bark at motorcycle sounds, UPS trucks, and sometimes some other trucks.

Gets along with cats: No
Gets along with dogs: Yes
Good with Children?: Unknown

Accessories Included: A crate with bedding that he likes to sleep in at night, it’s in my bedroom.
A dog bed that he likes to lay in during the day that I put in the living room.
6 stuffed toys and a plastic bone.
A dog food bowl and water bowl
A harness, leash and collar.
His “throne,” which is a foot stool, if the owner would like.

Dez’s Personality

His enthusiasm on his walks
His facial expression when I am talking to him
His love of curling up with me and receiving petting
The way he excitedly plays with his toys
How he briefly runs between two rooms to show his happiness.

Dez’s Current Home Environment

I live in a two bedroom apartment on the first floor, and there is often music playing around the house, but in the evening it is quiet. We have wooden floors and carpets, both of which Dez enjoys to rest on. We have a nice porch, and he has a “throne” which is a footstool that he loves to sit on in the sun. I would be happy to give his throne, bed, and crate as well as his toys to his new owner. We have many dogs in the complex that he practices interacting with. He is still learning to be as friendly as he can be.

Dez’s Current Family:

I live with my boyfriend, and we both work during the day, but I give him morning and evening walks for ten minutes each time. Part of his family is also my dog walker, who brings her German Shepherd and a neighbor dog to play with Dez. He gets along great with them because my dog walker has trained him very well to be with those dogs, so I know he can be friendly and get along with other dogs when he spends time with them and has a knowledgeable person working with him.

Dez’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Dez’s favorite toys are stuffed animals from the pet store. He has a ladybug and squirrel which are his favorite. Once in a while he will play with a pull toy if I encourage him, but it’s not a go to of his. He likes bones from the pet store as well.

His favorite food is Whole Hearted limited ingredient dog food, his favorite flavors are salmon and lamb.

His favorite activity is taking a walk and playing at the dog park with my dog walker and her dog.

Cute Dez Story:

Dez loves to see her dog friends at the apartment complex. These are dogs she has become familiar with over time and my dog walker has introduced him to. He will excitedly approach them and do a cute little bounce. He also likes to pose for them, and although his leg is broken, he will hold it up in what looks like a cute ballerina pose.

Why is Dez Being Rehomed?

I have begun to work very long hours and it will only get more busy as I transition into a new job. I feel he deserves a home in which he has someone to come home earlier and even be with him during the day if possible.

Dez’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

A single adult or couple who have time to spend with him. It would be great if they had a yard for him to play in, or at least be willing to walk him on nice walks twice a day, and preferably an additional time during the day. I do know that his previous owner returned him to Austin Pets Alive because she lived on the third floor of an apartment complex and she said he would not climb all of the stairs. So anyone who lives in an apartment and has to go upstairs may run into the same issue.

Additional Comments:

Dez is a very sweet dog who is a joy to be with. He is adorable when he wags his tail, “talks” to me and holds up his ballerina (broken) paw. He does not let his paw slow him down, and the vet says he is not in pain. He is just like a regular happy dog who loves to be in nature.
