Xirena’s Personality

Xirena is a puppy that probably has more personality than I know most humans to have. She loves her cuddles, love, affection, belly rubs. She is very protective of her family, especially the one she is bonded to the most.

She always has her paws crossed when laying down (head up) like the princess that she is. She loves to play, and most of all belly rubs. When you come home, especially after an extended time away, she gets very excited, and smiles so big. Wants to run between your legs for back rubs, and hind quarters, then drops to the floor for belly rubs.

She tends to sleep quite a bit during the day, and wakes up in the evening for fun. She likes to spend a lot of time outside, especially in the sun. She is also an absolute water dog! Loves to swim, play in her wading pool, search for treats in her water. But she is a SPONGE considering how short her coat. She LOVES the snow and winter time.

She is a guard dog when it comes to her property. In the backyard she will patrol the perimeter continuously. Unfortunately we have not been able to break her out of running the fence when people walk by with their dogs. With consistent training, I know she can be broken of this activity. She needs to learn trust in strangers before they enter the property. We have found that going for a good 30min walk off property really helps.

Unfortunately we have found she is really picky with how quickly she grows to trust someone. We have had people with zero issues entering the house, whereas other people have taken a few visits to warm up to. Either way we have learned that she has a 2 foot rule. Being that as long as they stay 2ft way from her until she gets used to them, and do not stare her down in the eyes. Treats go a LOOONGG way if initially tossed to her, not hand given. Positive experience and reinforcement is a must. Once you have earned her trust, she is glued to you, and wants to give all the licks and love she can.

Off property, we have had little to no problems walking passed people or other dogs. again maintaining that 2ft rule if she doesn’t know/trust them. She is NOT an aggressive dog, she is protective, and needs time to gain your trust. She has never bitten anyone, but she nipped in warning to back away from her. If you can notice her warnings, she is easily deterred and handled in a safe, positive re-enforcement type of method. However, if need be for safety purposes, and comfortability of anyone that handles her, she is also trained to wear a basket style humane muzzle that provides her zero restriction to eat or drink.

She has gotten better as she has gotten older, that being she can sit/lay down patiently while you have a friendly conversation. She is also a lot better with random dog confrontations when she is off leash. A lot of this stems from confidence and trust issues.

Xirena’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

She loves her bones (not direct from meat), and Greenies for extra special treat. She LOVES cheese, and watermelon. She likes her rope toys for tug-a-war. Her ABSOLUTE favorite toy, however, is a laser pointer used for cats. Just the sound of moving the pointer gets her ears perked, runs, up and is ready to seek out and chase down that pesky red dot. She will chase it for hours!

Cute Xirena Story:

When we first discovered her knack for swimming. When she was just a couple months old, I had noticed her fur behind her ears were parted naturally to look like fish gills. I immediately said “Oh she better be water dog with gills like that!” Se we took her camping for the first time at about 8 months old. We had gone down to the lake, and I went swimming pretty far out that I could not touch the bottom. My wife had her on the leash on the beach and let her go to chase after me. She got about 5ft into the water and ran back to shore. The moment I yelled out for Xirena, she looked me dead straight and swam immediately for her first time, and owned it. Has loved swimming ever since.

Why is Xirena Being Rehomed?

Unfortunately, since the day we got Xirena, it has been a challenge. Started with not being the breed we had been prepared for, and familiar with raising. We took every step within our means to try to raise her the best we could. With covid and isolated living situations, that had already made it hard enough as it was.

After a couple of years, our working schedules had dramatically changed. I had been put in a position to work out of town again, for prolonged periods of time. for 2 1/2 years now we have struggled to maintain a healthy, balanced work/home life. As time has gone on, it has steadily gotten more difficult to provide her to attention, and dedication she deserves.

The most recent development that had pushed us into a position to make this hard decision, was getting a job opportunity to relocate to New Zealand. We had done our research, and between the cost of relocating an animal to another country, let alone the stress and behavioral issues that could arise from the process, we have decided it to be more harmful and unfair to Xirena’s health and well being.

Xirena’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

We are looking for a country home that preferably has no other current pets, or at the very least has experience with introducing new animals in a safe and positive manor. We are looking for a loving home, that has the time, patience, and resources to continue her training, and help her grow even more into the the amazing dog that she already is. A home that can offer the love and support she deserves.
