Chet’s Personality

Chet is an all-black American short-haired male with yellow eyes. His lively nature is due to his starting life on a barn but has since been living indoors. Chet is a highly social cat and prefers to be with people, he follows you everywhere unless he’s sleeping. He’s constantly playing, mischievous at times, and quite comical. He also enjoys snuggle time and is a pretty easygoing cat. The majority of the time he is quiet with occasional chit-chat discussions he may have with you 🙂

He is past 1 year of age and does seem to be mellowing, though he does have bursts of energy. Occasionally, he will run around the house like a madman while batting some toys intermittently. He does need scratching posts, though I have been trimming his nails down so he’s not cutting me or other people during play (he doesn’t know what pain is I guess, haha).

Though he may have started life outdoors, he does find comfort in being indoors. He does well on a harness and leash outside, but certain noises spook him like cars and airplanes flying over. So I do advise that he retains being an indoor cat for safety with occasional outdoor activity on harness/leash for enrichment if there are not many loud noises.

Some work may be needed to socialize with other cats but is likely to get along with cats his age or somewhat older that will play/wrestle with him. We have a senior cat that Chet has never shown aggression towards, however, Chet will try to wrestle with him. We have to separate them when they are not supervised, otherwise Chet will continue to annoy and taunt the senior. He has never been around dogs. Any small animal pets would likely be at risk.

Chet’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Chet is not picky about toys as long as they are bouncing, rolling, or strolling. Chet is also a grazer cat, so his favorite food is still in question, seems to not care for wet food as much but he will graze on small amounts and loves the gravy. He will also lap up cat purree treats and crunchy treats with soft fillings. He also likes gazing out into the windows, having play sessions, cuddle sessions, and is genuinely a happy cat.

Cute Chet Story:

His mischievous nature and curiosity are comical. His current foster parent bought a new water fountain for Chet to drink out of. Chet didn’t know what to think and just sat and stared at it for a few moments. Then proceeded to dab his paw in the running water as though it was possibly a new toy. Chet also somersaults? For instance, if you’re in your bedroom or bathroom and the door is closed, sometimes he will be at the door and do a gentle somersault…not sure why he does this other then to notify you that he wants out.

Why is Chet Being Rehomed?

Unfortunately, Chet was given to my mother at the wrong time. My mother was having several health issues last year but still working. One of her co-workers brought this little kitten in (last November) to see who would take him home. She kind of forced the kitten on my mother and my mother was going to find him a new home. However, her health issues caught up to her this past January, and was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

I had to take my time to be with her and contend with her health needs while taking care of Chet and her senior cat. I haven’t had the time to figure out a new home for him, but eventually transferred both cats and my mother to live with me in Ohio (my mother and the cats are from Wisconsin).

Because of the situation, my husband is allergic to cats and is not a fan of the rambunctious behavior Chet can display, plus our senior cat is exhausted from being tackled every few hours. So Chet is currently living with a friend of mine as a foster and doesn’t mind watching over Chet until I can find him a new home.

If circumstances were different, I would undoubtedly keep him, but there are too many factors and stress involved. I just feel bad that we could not be his permanent owners because he truly is a wonderful cat.

Chet’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

Chet would do well with a couple, one-on-one owner, or a family with older children (8+ or older). I would be concerned about younger children getting hurt since Chet still uses his teeth and claws during play – again, its not agression but there are certain behaviors that Chet may take as play where his teeth and claws come out easily.

I wouldn’t mind knowing how Chet is getting along with his new owners. Before the move, Chet was with me a lot and I took care of him. Essentially he’d follow me everywhere, even when I teleworked he’d be in the same room.

After moving to Ohio, Chet has been doing very well with my friend who is equally giving him the same attention which makes me hopeful that he will adjust well to new owners but still worry since he hasn’t had a permanent home since birth I believe.
