APPA German Shepherd Yellow Lab Mix For Adoption Near San Diego 9

Hi, My name is Appa!

APPA is an adorable, smart and very devoted mixed breed dog. He is a Labrador Retriever / Black Mouth Cur mix, with deep brown eyes and an amazing smile. Appa is very healthy, up to date on shots and neutered. He is 6 years old and weighs about 70 pounds. He currently lives in Poway, CA, near San Diego.

APPA has so many wonderful qualities. He is so loving and cuddly. He loves to snuggle and get belly rubs. He is very eager to please and lets you know just how special you are to him.

Appa’s owner is so sad to have to make the very difficult decision to rehome him. Unfortunately her circumstances make it very difficult to provide him with the type of home he needs and very much deserves. She is in the process of going through a divorce, and is a single mom to two small boys.

One of her sons has developed severe allergies to pet dander. Her place of residence is also not good for APPA, who tends to bark to alert her to the presence of strangers (as is the trait for which Black Mouth Curs are bred). Likely because of all of the recent tumultuous life changes, Appa is showing some nervousness around the boys,  and his owner feels that he would be happier in an adults only home.

APPA’s ideal home will be with adults (or a family with teenaged kids) who have lots of time for him. He needs a country or suburbuan home with a large, securely fenced yard to play in. He is a great dog, and his natural instinct is to keep his home and family safe from intruders. He will bark at strangers, so a high-traffic area with lots of people coming and going would not be ideal for him.

Appa is not suitable for homes with cats or other small animals. He has lived with another dog and gotten along well.

Please offer Appa the quiet, predictable home environment he needs and very much deserves. He can’t wait to meet you!

Appa’s Personality

His sweet soulful eyes when he puts his head on your lap, how excited he gets for treats and squeaky toys, how much he loves to be snuggled and petted, the whole-body vibration he gets when he REALLY wants to stay in a sit and please you but also REALLY wants the snuggles and/or treat that he is waiting for

Appa’s Current Home Environment

I’m currently going through a divorce. Previously, he lived separately from my two boys (ages 4 and 2). He is older than my eldest son, Lucas. When Lucas was 2, we found out that he had a dander allergy. As a result, Appa and our other dog, Maya, lived separately from the boys in their dog run, hallway, and my room).

However, the boys and I moved in June with Appa to a condo (my ex has our other dog Maya – who was the alpha). Our new place does not allow for separate living areas for Appa and the boys. He has been good with them overall, but will growl on occasion when they are two loud or he feels like they are blocking him from me.

Appa’s Current Family:

Appa lives with me and my two sons, Lucas and Grant, who are 4 yrs and 2 yrs respectively. Up until June of 2016 we also shared a home with my soon-to-be ex-husband and Maya, our female dog, who is 2 years older than Appa.

Appa’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Appa loves any toy that can be chewed and/or squeaks. He will eat anything that you put in front of him, but he LOVES apples and blueberries. (I bribe him with a post-bath apple). He will play fetch for however long you are willing to play.

Cute Appa Story:

When I went into labor with my eldest son, I took Appa for a pre-hospital walk (everyone says walking is great to ease labor). The contractions came on stronger and quicker in our very HILLY neighborhood. Whenever I slowed down going uphill, Appa would look back at me and then, very patiently, help pull me up the hill. He has been forever known since then as my sled dog 🙂

Why is Appa Being Rehomed?

The closer proximity between my son and Appa has aggravated his allergies. While, in my heart, I know that Appa is a lover – his occasional growling at the boys has me concerned. We’d also received an HOA violation for his barking and face the possibility of fines/loss of our lease. Beyond that, between working full-time and raising the boys on my own I don’t have the time to walk or give Appa the attention he deserves.

Appa’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

A patient owner that has the time work through the Bark Buster training with Appa and can give him the time and attention that he deserves. Ideally, it would be a single person, couple, or family with older children. He would LOVE to go for a regular run.
