Awa’s Personality

Awa is very loving, has a sweet disposition, is eager to please, is perceptive, and is happy-go-lucky.

Awa’s Current Home Environment

We live in a single-family home in Kailua. Awa is primarily an outside dog, as my husband and I work in town, so we leave early and come home in the late afternoon. Awa has the run of a large backyard and a covered patio area. She also has a roomy dog house, but usually prefers moving her dog bed onto the grass! Our 16 month old son likes to say hello to Awa, but due to her exuberance, we cannot let him into the backyard on his own (i.e. we either have to carry our son or restrain Awa for a bit whenever he is outside with her).

Awa’s Current Family:

We are a family of three: my husband, our son (who is 16 months old), and myself. My husband is a teacher and I work in a high school library; our son is cared for by his grandparents during the work week. Awa really enjoys children, and our son loves dogs, but she is strong and excitable, so we exercise caution.

Awa’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Awa’s favorite toys are tennis balls, chew toys, stuffed animals, and rubber slippers. She is not picky about food/treats; she does really like wet dog food, peanut butter, and “snausage” treats. Her favorite activities are running/walks, interacting with people, getting treats, and going on car rides.

Cute Awa Story:

When we were removing a fence in our backyard, the gate was standing alone (so there was only a door). Awa was so accustomed to sitting behind the gate before being let outside for a walk that she continued to do so even without the fence to keep her in! It was pretty funny to see her sitting behind the gate even though she could easily go around it. 🙂

Why is Awa Being Rehomed?

Our primary reason for rehoming Awa is that we are growing a family and are concerned that Awa’s exuberance may be a hazard to young children. We do not believe that she poses an intentional harm, but she can knock someone over when in an excitable state and running around. We also feel that our time constraints are affecting our ability to care for Awa in the way that she needs. Due to her boundless energy, she would do better in a household that can take her for longer exercise and give her more attention. We also had a difficult time properly training Awa; we took her to a training course at Petco when we first adopted her, but it was not the most positive experience. Awa unfortunately did not care for our trainer and in one exercise snapped at her (the exercise was taking away a treat — which was a very odd reaction, because Awa had never acted that way before or since with us!). Not to say that we were perfect pet-owners, of course, as we needed to commit more time and be more diligent with training and helping her with her anxiety around other dogs.

Awa’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

We are looking for a loving home for Awa with lots of attention for her. A family that enjoys an active lifestyle would be great, as Awa loves to run and go for walks. Patience is also needed to care for Awa. We feel that Awa would be most comfortable in a home without other animals such as cats or dogs. She does like children a lot, but older children might be better because of her strength.

Additional Comments:

Thank you for your help during this challenging time. We hope that we can find a good match for Awa (and vice versa). If you have any questions, please let us know.
