Gabapentin once per day orally is optional. We use it once every month or so. We prefer to walk him twice a day and have him play with the other house dogs to dissipate energy. He is calm and this works well. He gets nervous around strange dogs as described.
♥ Behavior Issues: Outside the home is nervous around other dogs
Seven years ago he jumped our fence and bit our neighbor dogs ear, no stitches. Since then he has not gotten loose. When walking on a leash, he had has had three incidents of small dogs who became loose lunging at him and he put his mouth on their necks to hold them down. The first dog two years ago, Chili released quickly and there was no injuries. The second one was approx one year ago, while walking in our neighborhood at night, Chili was on a leash and a small dog attacked him and Chili clamped his mouth on the dog’s head, the dog was a Japanese Chin, and we could not get Chili to let go. The owner of the Japanese Chin, was able to push on Chili’s jaw and get him to release. The dog’s one eye was damaged because it bulged partially out of its socket and required emergency surgery. The eye was saved, and we helped pay most of the vet bill, but Chili was not considered at fault. It was very traumatic for everyone. The dogs eye was saved, but has a little cloudiness. We have worked with a trainer off and on and that has helped, but the best thing has been using a modified muzzle on every walk and staying far away from all dogs. He is much calmer with the muzzle device, it is a strap over his muzzle.. but more restrictive than a gentle leader. He has always been excellent with the three other dogs and a cat in our home.
♥ Gets along with: Older Children, Adults Only, Dogs
♥ Pet is: Spayed, Fully vaccinated, Crate Trained, House Broken, Leash Trained, Obedience Trained
♥ Food: Other
Iams for older dogs

Chili’s Personality

He is gentle, attentive, sweet and observant. He has been phenomenal with our Goldendoodle puppy and the other two dogs. He really likes other dogs in the house. He will chase the cat occasionally if the cat runs fast, so I have to watch that. But when I am home they are all together for hours without problem. The chasing is very brief and he stops as soon as I say No! Chili and Papi are used to being lose in the house for 4 to 6 hours at a time and one dog walker visit, then another 4 hrs until I return 3 days per week. They would be happiest rehoming together .. I am heartsick but I think they would give someone a great deal of love. Papi will attach to one person as a favorite, but he does love my husbands lap also. Any and all ideas are appreciated.

I understand both dogs may not be able to go together. I am willing to take plenty of time to start slow and get Chili and/or Papi acclimated while still having time at our house too. . If we could find someone close. Chili is totally relaxed with his muzzle strap, but he is still best walked away from other dogs. Papi barks a lot at other dogs but is fine at a dog park with other small dogs. Chili is so handsome and Papi so cute and comical. papi is very playful, even at age 8. And just had his teeth cleaned, no health issues.

Why is Chili Being Rehomed?

We rescued Chili with Papi, a seven pound Chihuahua with a broken leg at a similar time. We have always had one or two other dogs raised from puppies in the home and have loved our dog pack. Especially me. Chili and Papi had some reservations around men, but have come to love the household men ( 4 adult sons in and out). More than Papi, Chili will warm quickly to most visitors and has never bitten a human. He will occasionally be reserved and a little stiff if someone comes at him too quickly. I know how to prevent that now. Chili is reliable and very sweet. He continues to be a supreme couch snuggler, an avid playmate for our Goldendoodle, and a good watchdog. He handles Papi and Sadie the puggle well too. Papi on the other hand, is still somewhat hand shy with anyone besides me ( Kathleen) and has nipped multiple times. We have been so torn since the last episode with Chili. We have a good routine with him, and he is so loved … but that last incident was very traumatic and I worry about the possibility of something again. Our vet also gave us Gabapentin to help him relax a bit and we do use that but not everyday. He is very relaxed and well behaved in the house and in walks with his muzzle type strap. Now our daughter is moving close with two 4 year old grandchildren. This is a big change. We were going to put Chili and Papi in a kennel for her visits, but now they will be here often starting in June. Papi is too nervous, and our vet does not recommend that Chili be around children. He does not get nervous around them on walks, but I don’t want to take any chances.
