All About Lupini – Sharbull Terrier Dog in Pittsburgh PA

Name of Pet: Lupini
Location: Pittsburgh, PA, 15221
Type of Pet: dog
Breed of Pet: Shar Pei Amstaff (American Staffordshire Terrier) mix AKA  Lab-Pei
Sex of Pet: Male
Age of Pet: 2 years
Spayed/Neutered?: Yes
Health Problems: No

Lupini is a healthy boy. He doesn’t have any major health problems other than that he was born with narrow ear canals. They get itchy from time to time and require ear drops, which he doesn’t like, so most of the time we skip the drops and I just wipe them with a cloth. He shakes his head a lot because of his narrow ears, but the vet said it is not causing him any harm. It might be something that needs to be treated in the future if it starts to bother him more.

He is up to date with all vaccines and has always been on preventative medications for fleas, tics and worms. He is microchipped and neutered. He is great with going to the vet – he usually loves the attention!

Behavior Issues: Yes

Lupini is leash reactive towards other dogs. He can also be aggressive towards other male dogs off-leash – he is fine with some male dogs but on occasion he can be aggressive towards certain male dogs he doesn’t like. Has always been completely fine with smaller female dogs, he has lived with a small female dog for the past year and they get along really well. Because of this, we usually avoid on-leash walks in areas with other dogs, and I keep him away from other off-lead dogs that he doesn’t know.

He has done a lot of training and come a long way, but the leash reactivity has been his biggest problem. He tries so hard to be a good boy, but this is his biggest weakness and will require more work with him. Because of the progress he has made, I’m confident that with someone dedicated and experienced, he will overcome the worst of it. He is such a lovely boy that he deserves someone to be patient and understanding with him, and who appreciates all of his good qualities so much that they can continue to work through this with him.

He can occasionally be possessive of treats (raw hide bones are his particular favorites), but this happens very rarely. Day to day, he lets the smaller female dog and I take his treat, food, toys with no issue.

He recently started taking medication for anxiety to help with the leash reactivity, and it has already helped him a lot.

Lupini went to puppy classes – he is very smart and knows all basic commands – sit, stay, lie down, come. Very good at off-leash recall if there are no other dogs around (he will be distracted if there are other dogs). He is very well crate trained, completely house broken. He can be stubborn (a classic shar pei trait), but in the house he is a very well behaved boy if he gets enough exercise and mental stimulation.

So cozy and cute!

Lupini’s Personality

Lupini is a very special dog. He is extremely intelligent – both emotionally intelligent and very smart. He is the most lovable boy with the funniest facial expressions and eyes that just melt your heart.  Sometimes it feels like he can read your mind. Most people that know him say that he is more human than dog because of how smart he is. He is very aware of his surroundings at all times.. He is full of emotion, just bursting with it most of the time – his whole butt wiggles when he wags his tail with excitement. He has a passion for life that is contagious – the vet said ‘he is just so excited to be alive!’

Lupini is happiest if he has a job to do – his favorite thing is guarding the yard from deer or squirrels. He is an adventurous, outdoor loving dog that loves to run in the forest, chase his dog friends around a field and protecting the garden. Lupini is a strong dog with a lot of energy and he does best with a lot of outdoor time and exercise. He Is not a particularly cuddlely dog, but loves when you show affection with head scratches and lots of praise. After a long day outside, he will happily curl up at your feet and his little tail wags lets you know that he is a happy boy.

Lupini is a great companion. He is always happiest when he’s at your side. He doesn’t like to be far away from you, and if left to roam he will come back to you naturally on his own and sit by your feet. He doesn’t have a strong prey drive and he is not a hunter. He loves to play with other smaller female dogs, chasing & wrestling are his favorite play activities. He is generally a serious dog, but he has his goofy moments when you tickle him on his back with his tongue hanging out – he will make you laugh out loud!

Lupini’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Lupini isn’t a picky eater, he likes almost everything.

Lupini doesn’t go crazy for balls or toys – he loves something good to chew on like a raw-hide chew or antler, or kong stuffed with cheese and peanut butter.

His favorite activities are guarding the yard, wrestling with other dogs, hiking and long walks in the forest or fields where he can roam free.

Cute Lupini Story:

There is a funny and heartwarming moment every day with Lupini because he is so expressive and full of life. My favorite thing is when he gets so excited to see you that he can barely contain himself – when you come home, he sits and waits to be greeted like a good boy but his tail is wagging so hard his whole body is moving! His little ears flutter out to the side you think he’s just going to fly away!

Why is Lupini Being Rehomed?

Lupini has been my best friend for the past 2 years, he has slept next to me every single night and the thought of parting with him absolutely breaks my heart. I have had him since he was 5 months old. I love him more than anything in the world, and because of that, I have to admit I am not able to give him the home that he deserves because of my life situation. I have tried absolutely everything I can to give him a great life, but I have run out of options and am not able to provide a stable living environment for him.

Over this past year, I have gone through a horrible break up of a 10 year relationship, I lost my home, I had surgery that put me in hospital for 3 weeks and I have been relying on my family’s help for the past 6 months. I don’t have anywhere to live, and Lupini has been stuck indoors in small spaces because I haven’t been able to afford a home for myself and we have been living with relatives and staying in airbnbs.

I had hoped so badly it wouldn’t come to this point, but I am barely currently able to take care of myself let alone Lupini as well. I have tried everything and exhausted all of my options. It breaks my heart to see him stuck in this situation every day, and I have to make this horribly difficult decision to find him a new family that can give him the life he deserves. I’ve tried absolutely everything I could to improve our situation, but I just can’t get my feet underneath me.

My absolute worst nightmare is Lupini ending up in a shelter and I will do absolutely anything to prevent this from happening.

Lupini’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

My main priority is finding someone who will love and appreciate Lupini and much as I do. He is not the easiest dog at times, but he is worth all of the effort. He will be the most loyal and loving companion for the right person.  Lupini will need to go to a home that has experience  with large, strong male dogs with a naturally protective instinct.

He seems to love human males particularly. His favorite people are all adult human males that give him structure and are strict with his obedience.

Lupini would do best in a home with someone who has a lot of outdoor space and no other male dogs.
