Meet Griffey, Miniature Poodle – Miniature Pinscher (Minpin) mix dog For Adoption in Laurel Maryland

Griffey is a sweet senior male Miniature Poodle – Miniature Pinscher (Minpin) mix dog for adoption to a very loving home in or near Laurel Maryland. This very special Dog is 14 and weighs about 22 pounds.

Griffey is being placed for adoption by owner for the following reason:

Griffey was rescued by my mother in 2004, not long after she retired. Unfortunately, she took ill earlier this year and now resides in an assisted living facility, and can no longer care for him.

My wife and I have “adopted” him in the interim. The challenge is that we both work full time and have very busy schedules. Griffey is simply not used to being alone in a house for the better part of 10 hours a day, and it’s heartbreaking to me that he has to endure this change at this stage in his life. (I think we lose sight of the fact that our pets are just as affected as their human family members when such a life-altering event, such as what happened with my mom, occurs.)

He craves human connection, interaction and companionship throughout any given day. I want him to be with someone who can give him that time, attention, and affection around the clock.

We briefly discussed the idea of a dog-sitter or walker, but we are not comfortable with strangers entering our home when we are not present.

Griffey’s Personality

Patience – when any of us is having a not great day, he senses that and gives us a little space instead of immediately begging for food/attention, etc.
Low maintenance – generally just needs a couple walks a day and is fine.
Intelligence – my mother trained him well in terms of requesting food, going into his crate on command, knowing when it’s “quiet time” and when it’s OK to frolic.
Easy-going – gets along with pets of all kinds, including cats (my mom semi-“adopted” a couple of strays by providing them food and refuge on her back porch and Griff immediately took to them); when we take him out, they always gravitate to each other, regardless of breed.
Loving nature – above everything else. He gives everyone the “benefit of the doubt”, so to say, and gives his unconditional love and loyalty.

Griffey’s Current Home Environment

Suburban location (he was raised and had spent most of his life in an urban one) in a rather quiet, pet-friendly development, single-family home, pest- and contaminant-free.

Griffey’s Current Family:

I live with my wife of 20 years and our 7-year old daughter. My wife and I have both grown up with and been around dogs for the better part of our lives. The little one instantly took to Griffey and vice versa (she’d had prior encounters when visiting my mother at her old house). We had a beagle (Barry Shiloh Forte) who passed from cancer at age 7 in 2006.

Griffey’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?

Balls of any kind, preferably smaller ones that he can catch with his mouth. He is not at all particular about food – put it in front of him and he’ll eat it! Loves to stay hydrated with lots of water. Activity-wise, he enjoys simple walks, socializing with other pets and people, and looking out the window at passersby.

Cute Griffey Story:

To us, pretty much anything he does is heartwarming – he’s so smart, gentle, and full of love. When he has an occasional accident in the house, upon our return home, when we first see the accident (and before even reacting or uttering a word), he’ll suddenly drop his head and have a “sad eyes” look, like he knows he made a mistake and knows that we now know it. It’s almost impossible to be upset with him upon seeing that; it’s something one has to experience, I guess.

Why is Griffey Being Rehomed?

Griffey was rescued by my mother in 2004, not long after she retired. Unfortunately, she took ill earlier this year and now resides in an assisted living facility, and can no longer care for him. My wife and I have “adopted” him in the interim. The challenge is that we both work full time and have very busy schedules. Griffey is simply not used to being alone in a house for the better part of 10 hours a day, and it’s heartbreaking to me that he has to endure this change at this stage in his life. (I think we lose sight of the fact that our pets are just as affected as their human family members when such a life-altering event, such as what happened with my mom, occurs.) He craves human connection, interaction and companionship throughout any given day. I want him to be with someone who can give him that time, attention, and affection around the clock.

We briefly discussed the idea of a dog-sitter or walker, but we are not comfortable with strangers entering our home when we are not present.

Griffey’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:

Preferably, retiree(s) or teleworker(s), however occasional or frequent. Basically, someone who is going to be in the house more often than not over the course of a given day/week. We want Griffey to live out his golden years in a household where he’ll be given that attention, priority, and full-on _love_ (and even spoiling) that he deserves.

Also, the prospective parent(s) would need to understand that, while he is still remarkably full of vigor, Griff is indeed 14 years of age and is in the sunset of his life.

Additional Comments:

We would not be hovering parents or badger the new parents excessively about how he would be doing; we just request updates every now and again to give us peace of mind. Also, my mother fully understands the situation and has given her blessing for us to pursue a rehoming, and she’d be very much interested in being kept abreast of Griffey’s experience.
