When properly introduced, Darcy gets along well with adults and respectful older children. She is best suited to a home without other pets, ideally in the countryside or in a quiet neighborhood with large, secluded yards. Her home will need a tall, secure fence.
Mr. Darcy loves her humans with all her heart. She takes her duty to serve and protect them fiercely. She assumes that other dogs and strangers are a threat until they can prove to her that they mean no harm.
Is Darcy a “dog park dog”? Heck No! Should you invite her to a 6 year old’s birthday party? Nope! Can you curl up on the sofa with her for a night of Netflix and popcorn? Absolutely! Will she love you with all her heart? Definitely!

Bullmastiffs were originally bred for a guard animal. Mr. Darcy loves “her people” and goes into protective mode (barking and growling) when in new or uncertain situations and when meeting new people for the first time. I have mitigated this by me1eting guests on my deck before bringing them into my home and this helps tremendously because then she knows they are “safe”.
I always walk her on leash because she has been aggressive with another dog (growling and showing teeth, and snipping) and because of her size just want to make sure that nothing would ever remotely happen again.
She can be apprehensive when meeting new people/animals, but when introduced well and intentionally, is able to make positive relationships.

Mr. Darcy’s Personality
Mr. Darcy is sweet as pie. She is a “people dog” who much prefers attention and cuddling rather than playing or being with her dog friends.
She is very sensitive and tries her best to do what is asked/expected of her at all times. Because of this, she is very easy to train (she is good with basic obedience – sit, come, stay – and shakes paws, shows her tummy, plays dead, etc).
I first got her as a puppy when I was newly widowed and she has been the perfect addition to my life.. her affection is unmatched, and she easily adores people who care for her.
She is content with cuddling on the couch for a day, but also enjoys long walks and spending time with family on the farm.
Because she is so adaptable and desires to be around people, she is just as comfortable in an apartment as she would be on an average 🙂 all she really wants is love and affection and she will repay it back in spades.
I would just emphasize how sweet and sensitive Mr. Darcy is – I am looking for a quiet home where she is loved and appreciated equally as she is with me.
She really only desires connection and affection (verbal and physical), with these two things as well as working with her behaviour reactivity (I do the Trust Technique with her) she will be the most endearing pup anyone can have 🙂
Why is Mr. Darcy Being Rehomed?
I’m moving into a new environment with a roommate where I cannot control the factors to make her successful / not reactive. Eg. meeting guests outside before entering, etc.
