Should You Adopt a Shih-Tzu?
With their charming personalities, adorable faces, and low-exercise needs, Shih Tzus have become one of the most beloved companion dogs in the world. But before you fall head over heels for those big round eyes, it’s important to understand whether this breed is the right fit for your lifestyle.
Pros of Adopting a Shih Tzu
- Affectionate & Loving: Shih Tzus were bred specifically as lap dogs, and they take their job seriously. They thrive on human companionship and love to cuddle.
- Great for Apartments: Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them ideal for apartment living or homes without yards.
- Generally Good with Kids & Other Pets: Friendly and social, Shih Tzus usually get along well with children, other dogs, and even cats—especially with early socialization.
- Low Shedding: Although they require regular grooming, Shih Tzus don’t shed as much as many other breeds, making them a good choice for some allergy-sensitive homes.
- Adaptable & Easygoing: Whether you’re a retiree, a family, or a first-time dog owner, Shih Tzus are generally happy to adapt to your lifestyle—as long as they’re loved.
Cons of Adopting a Shih Tzu
- High Grooming Needs: Their luxurious coat needs daily brushing and regular professional grooming to prevent mats and tangles, unless kept trimmed short.
- Can Be Stubborn: Shih Tzus are smart but independent. House training can take patience, and some may test boundaries during training.
- Prone to Health Issues: As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, Shih Tzus can experience breathing difficulties, especially in hot weather. Eye and dental problems are also common.
- May Bark for Attention: While not excessive barkers, some Shih Tzus will vocalize when they want something—especially if rewarded for it!
- Not Ideal for Rough Play: Their small size means they can be easily injured by toddlers or large, rowdy dogs if not properly supervised.
Is a Shih Tzu Right for You?
If you’re looking for a sweet, loyal, and low-energy companion who’s happy to lounge on the couch and follow you from room to room, a Shih Tzu may be the perfect match. They do best in homes where they are truly treated as a member of the family and are given the love and care they deserve—including regular grooming and vet visits.
Still not sure? Reach out to us with your questions, or join our waiting list to be notified when a Shih Tzu becomes available for adoption near you.
Shih-Tzu Adoption FAQ
What is the average lifespan of a Shih Tzu?
Shih Tzus typically live between 10 and 16 years. With proper care, routine veterinary visits, and a healthy diet, many live long, happy lives well into their teens.
Are Shih Tzus hypoallergenic?
Shih Tzus are considered hypoallergenic by some due to their low shedding, hair-like coat. However, no dog is 100% allergy-proof, and individual reactions may vary.
Do Shih Tzus shed?
Shih Tzus have a long, flowing double coat that sheds very minimally, especially if brushed regularly. Most shedding gets caught in the coat, so routine grooming is essential to prevent matting.
Are Shih Tzus good with children?
Yes. Shih Tzus are gentle, affectionate, and playful with children, especially when raised around them. Because of their small size, supervised interaction is important with younger kids to prevent accidental injury.
Do Shih Tzus get along with other pets?
Yes. Shih Tzus are typically friendly and adaptable. They tend to get along well with other dogs and can coexist peacefully with cats, especially if socialized early.
How much exercise does a Shih Tzu need?
Shih Tzus need 20 to 30 minutes of light exercise daily, such as short walks or indoor play. They’re content with a relaxed lifestyle and are well-suited for apartment living.
Do Shih Tzus bark a lot?
Shih Tzus can be vocal and alert but are not excessive barkers when trained. They may bark to announce visitors or ask for attention, but typically settle quickly.
Are Shih Tzus easy to train?
Shih Tzus are intelligent but can be a bit stubborn or independent. Positive reinforcement and patience are key to successful training, especially with housebreaking.
Do Shih Tzus need regular grooming?
Yes. Their long, luxurious coats require frequent brushing (daily if kept long), and many owners opt for regular professional grooming or a “puppy cut” to make care easier.
What are common health concerns for Shih Tzus?
Shih Tzus are prone to brachycephalic issues (due to their flat faces), including breathing difficulties. Other common issues include eye problems, dental disease, and hip dysplasia. Regular vet care helps manage risks.
Is a Shih Tzu a good dog for a first-time owner?
Yes! Shih Tzus are affectionate, low-exercise, and thrive in loving homes. Their grooming needs and slight stubborn streak are manageable with patience, making them a great match for many first-time dog owners.
